Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Hilarious, as expected
Revisado: 05-30-24
Not your typical story, but you know that already. They don’t break the 4th wall, but if it were on screen, I’d expect a nod or wink to the screen. Kate was super fun.
I swore the entire time that London Hughes was Freema Agyeman since I’d never heard her before. Sassy as the wind.
Wasn’t really sure what to do with the song clips between chapters. Haven’t really seen that since books on physical media. Just some songs Felicia likes?

Loved it. Just the wit I would expect. Wrapped up neatly at the end like a mystery novel. Wil is a great narrator, for we who appreciate him. Oh, and the cats!
My only issue is a small production error where the recording skips. It’s very noticeable, but I don’t think I missed much content.

Historia
It is the Age of Enlightenment - of new and magical political movements, from the necromancer Robespierre calling for revolution in France, to the weather mage Toussaint L'Ouverture leading the slaves of Haiti in their fight for freedom, to the bold new Prime Minister William Pitt weighing the legalization of magic among commoners in Britain and abolition throughout its colonies overseas. But amid all of the upheaval of the early modern world, there is an unknown force inciting all of human civilization into violent conflict.

I really wanted to like it, and I kinda did?
Revisado: 06-07-23
So many comparisons to Jonathan Strange. The premise fit that potential. But it’s like this is a collection of all the boring legal/bureaucratic that was cut from JS. Not to say it’s not it’s own story, but most of it has that feel. Were my expectations too high? I don’t think so.
Not to say nothing happens, but a ton is subtly setting the stage for the action that finally happens in the last quarter. Last 1/5? A big issue is there’s very little active magic use. They talk about people using magic, and even more about people who aren’t allowed to use magic. But it’s very in the background, the same way gravity is. Most of it is just part of the human culture.
I’ve enjoyed several historical fictions where they add magic to the world and they were fantastic, so it’s not like it’s not my genre. I was so glad to finally reach the end. The 2nd book also SOUNDS interesting, but I don’t want to fall into that same trap.

Historia
The Wandering Inn has a princess who solves problems rather than creates them, and her name is Lyonette. Yet what happens when the innkeeper returns to manage her inn? Lyonette must learn to be a good employee rather than manage everything herself, and sharing power is never easy.... Nor is it ever simple in war, but that is where Geneva Scala remains. In bloodier and increasingly brutal battlefields, The Last Light of Baleros is now growing in fame, but there is no future there.

Pacing Issues - playing catch up
Revisado: 04-08-23
Right off, I enjoyed the book, and am continuing the series. How could I stop?
BUT
No one wanted to start off with 6 hours of the king of destruction. I can’t imagine the frustration for people who had to wait between books. Some seemed like stories they’ve meant to tell for a while, but didn’t get around to fitting it into past books, and that’s why there was so much of it. And I don’t understand why they didn’t have a chapter (they’re long), go visit other characters, and then occasionally cycle back like most books. None was was chronologically important to be told before other segments and a lot was tales of his original rule, unless I misunderstood. Even the twins didn’t have much progression compared to the time spent on them.
Plus most of it was unnecessary. He fits a very particular well used archetype. Anyone with any ability to read between the line could divine almost everything laid out here. While the author might have had a few really inspired things they wanted to tell about (and some was great listening), there’s just so much that was telling us what we already knew, including internal motivations. I wouldn’t suggest skipping it, but maybe listen on a faster speed or use the chapters to skip around and break it up. A lot of the other reviewers seem to have hated it all outright, but I think most of that is they didn’t have the patience for it told when and how it was.
I’m the same vein, the doctor and emperor chapters shouldn’t have been lumped all together. Toren might fit in that same category, but personally I didn’t feel like that section dragged. And there was the benefit of having checked in with our fav characters.

When Tom is invited to the reading of a will of a great-uncle he’s never heard of, there’s no way to know what to expect. But on the long list of possible things to inherit, a travelling carnival ghost train is the very last on the list. To get his full $10 million inheritance, all Tom has to do is run the antique ride until his 18th birthday. Easy. Except for a strange caped-creep he’s never met, who’s trying to con him out of the money...and the actual ghosts and ghouls who call the ride home.

Lots of fun but
Revisado: 06-29-20
My only complaint is that the song in between chapters is pretty long for an audiobook and while it was enjoyable (and confusing) the first time, it was already tiresome by the 2nd play through.
The story was light, quick, and zany. The characters were likable.... except of course for the bad guy.

Yikes
Revisado: 02-20-20
This isn’t my usual book genre. I usually like this kinda story in movie format where I know the antagonist will get their’s in 2 hrs or less.
But the story made me cringe so many times. Physical cringe. Not the writing, but the story, and it should evoke that response if you’re not a sociopath.
Still, the writing is decent with twists that take form just before explicitly revealed. And they don’t leave a ton of unanswered questions ‘to your imagination’ in the end. I always appreciate that.
They might’ve spent just a bit too long hinting at and illustrating the “wrongness” revealed. Eventually you get it and don’t need convincing.
Great narration performance.

Erin has done it again. The writing and story entrance. But the plot(?)... maybe the world are so much more abstract than Night Circus was.
Several parts I had to relisten to a couple times and I’ll listen to it many times again, gleaning meaning and hints that I missed.

Fun and fast
Revisado: 04-23-18
It was the deal of the day and had good reviews. It was super funny most of the time, hit a few deep subjects, and was the most frivolous thing I’ve listened to in a while.
That said it could have gone either way but the narrators didn’t an amazing job of keeping it real. Totally made it for me.

Post production volume editing can use adjustment
Revisado: 04-02-18
I felt like a had to keep my hand on the volume buttons the whole time. Instead of stage whispers, it sounds like real whispering that I can’t hear without turning it way up, and the whole thing needs to be turned a bit higher than other audiobooks. Then suddenly they’re yelling and I have to turn it way down. Just frustrating for a good classic with a great cast.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Exceptional
Revisado: 06-11-15
The dry British humor might not work for some people and the length of the story can cause some difficulty for some people.
However, if this doesn't deter you, this book is wonderful. The elements portrayed combine a little history and incorporate magic and Fairie into a thorough narrative. I've enjoyed the story several times and find it unique among the genre.
The narrator did a great job representing the different characters and their manners.
