Historia
A part of me wants to run away again. The memory of my death still haunts my dreams. But this is my home now. And I'll be damned if I give it up without a fight. I mean, all I have to do is learn how to navigate xianxia politics and train for battle while simultaneously running my farm and uncovering an ancient cataclysm that apparently destroyed the Azure Hills back in the day. Meanwhile, I'm about to be a father . . . Man, I'm kinda screwed, aren't I? At least I can call in the cavalry—ahem, poultry—to help.

Missed opportunity: bloated and convoluted
Revisado: 01-03-25
I have been a fans of the series for a long time, having reread the previous books several times and following the author other projects.
Unfortunately, this books is a huge miss.
There is a clear lack of editing, as the pacing, story arcs and dialogue just went down the drain.
So many characters feel out of place with their previous actions; using vocabulary clearly from American culture instead of in-world terms, forgetting previous lessons or simply being stupid for plot’s sake.
It is a long book that ends with a whiff, hopefully it is a set up for better things in the future as this one is an unsatisfying read.

Historia
When the son of Baron Lothar Aquilena of the Border Princes is taken captive, he calls in a debt of honour owed to him by Duke Carrard of Quenelles – once his brother-in-arms and now his bitter rival. This uneasy alliance of warrior knights mounts a dangerous expedition into the lifeless desolation beyond the badlands to a forgotten realm cursed to know neither water nor shade. The baron's son is held captive in the Land of the Dead, and the kings and queens of old do not rest easy in their tombs.

Modern revision of an old setting
Revisado: 02-04-24
Let me get this out of the way, if going “woke” or having “forced inclusivity” or “pandering to minorities” are terms that you use often, you are not going to like this book. There are plenty of other more dark and gritty and “realistic” stories out there, and I suggest that you dont spend your credits on this one.
If on the other side, you are coming in with a fresh start and free from the old lore, there is something to enjoy here.
The best take on it is that if you were reading this book to a child, it would be a great story. Up and downs, suspense, surprises and romance.
Ultimately it tells the story that anyone can be a knight (except that if you are poor).
Reducing one star as there was a subplot that went nowhere, otherwise enjoyable enough for what it is: a modern revision of an old setting.

Flawed story but great effort on the performance
Revisado: 01-25-24
I understand what others reviews said about the grunts and screaming but honestly the narrator and sound design team really tried to elevate a mediocre story.
Nothing of consequence happens, the ending is frankly silly and gets grim dumb for no reason.
Give this one a pass but do support the narrator and the sound design team by picking another title that they have worked on.

Amazing, better than the anime and outstanding narrator.
Revisado: 04-04-23
I came in with reservations but the audiobook experience has been excellent. The author takes the time to explain the natural consequences of the main character actions, tying things in clear cause and effects.
While on the anime you just accept things due to the inherent tropes of the format, here the world building is logical and the conclusions almost inevitable.
While some might say that some parts are “dry”, it is faithful to the tone that other historical military books take.
Will be following the series, it is a great first book.

Far too much filler, it is getting boring
Revisado: 06-07-22
Normally I quite like this series but this book is missing a good editor, the story has a lot of padding and the main character suffers from the chosen one trope. Many of the side characters start to behaving like Jason and the antagonists are either stupid or have no hope to match the protagonist power. All in all, it is starting to get dated and rather boring really.
Still amazing performance by Miller.
