Another great collection of interconnected tales of Brother Bones, building on the first two volumes. Some unexpected twists...like the Undead Avenger going toe-to-toe with a boxer, who just happens to be a centuries-old vampire! Narration is excellent! Onto the next volume!

If you liked Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger, then you should like Six Days of the Dragon as well. If you haven't listened to Undead Avenger yet, then you might want to do so first... Six Days of the Dragon develops the characters and world introduced in the first volume...and tells an exciting, jaw-dropping tale of supernatural good versus high stakes supernatural evil! The narrator's voice takes some getting used to at first, but his performance is excellent! On to the next volume!

C. O. Jones is one of the more unusual characters I've run across in the occult genre. He's a mob troubleshooter by profession, but his background and training in the OSS makes him an occult investigator...and he can't help but combat magical and paranormal threats when they cross his path. Also, though he works for the mob, he himself is likeable, and those he works for and with, though clearly criminal, don't seem like such bad sorts. The setting is strong...but in stereotypical fashion, he must move on at the end of the story, drifting...or guided by destiny to the next place he's needed? Looking forward to reading more of C. O. Jones' adventures. The narration was excellent as well...

A team-up between Dillon and an aged and retired, but neither ineffective nor forgotten Jim Anthony! I will say, I keep expecting more from Dillon...but he is young and learning...so I hope for great deeds from him in the future. Truthfully, as satisfying as this book was...it still left a lot of unanswered questions, cryptic refferences a la Easter eggs, and dangling threads. Hope more adventures of Dillon will find their way to Audible... Narration was the usual mix of otherwise pleasant listening marred by annoying mispronunciations, weak character voices, and unaccented dialog.

I listened to this one next after The New Adventures of Jim Anthony, Super-Detective, Volume 2, because the next/last book featuring Jim Anthony is The Vril Agenda which crosses over with Dillon, and I knew nothing about his character. Well, let me say, I enjoyed Young Dillon in the Halls of Shamballah for it's own sake. The book was too short in my opinion. Apparently, The Vril Agenda serves as the next chapter in Dillon's story, but that leaves a 9-year gap in his training and experience that I would've loved to hear more about. Anyway, the narrator was good, had lots of accents, and some pretty amusing character voices, but sometimes I had a hard time understanding him. Not sure if that was just me or the recording. I would actually love to listen to an audio dramatization or TV series or movie featuring Dillon in Shamballah that would bring all the characters to life. In general, there's so much more to learn about Dillon's parents, Shamballah, the Warmasters, and all it's other colorful inhabitants...and their arch-nemesis...!

Not just a Doc Savage clone...

So this is the last Jim Anthony audiobook... Well, almost. I found seven dedicated to him, plus a short story scattered here and there, but there's at least one cross-over novel featuring him which I've been working up to... First though, even though Jim Anthony is described as being a clone of Doc Savage - and there are certainly similarities - I think he stands on his own. Much as I like Doc, Jim Anthony comes across as more human. We know he's gonna win, but he has to put up more of a fight, and he won't be unscathed... Plus, he has weaknesses...but they're more than made up for by his friends and allies. Actually, I noticed one weakness that got kind of old to me after hearing it described in story after story with virtually the same outcome in every case: he spots a bad guy in a crowded public place with lots of civilians, and he's so worked up by the crimes that they've had a hand in that he makes a flamboyant, yet futile atempt to catch them single-handed, with liberal use of his famous belt, and often a highly destructive vehicular chase, only to end up with them dead or escaped, and frequently at the cost of colateral damage... He's supposed to be really intelligent, so one would think he'd grow out of this tendancy, and instead, make a stealthy approach and capture, or at least alert the police... Oh well... He's not perfect. That actually brings up another point: these stories tend to wander throughout his career timeline, so depending on when a story is set, you never know which version of Jim Anthony you might be reading about. In spite of that, I'm eager for more, and the original adventures of Jim Anthony as well. And the narration is the usual mix of enjoyable frustration...

I'm not clear why this book is called The New Adventures of Jim Anthony. Five volumes of Jim Anthony tales preceded this one... Well, as far as I know... And none of these are the original pulp adventures of Jim Anthony... Whatever. I enjoyed this one as with the rest. The narrator from the first four volumes is back - warts and all - and that's fine with me! I've gotten used to him... On to Volume 2!

I liked this volume in the Jim Anthony series, but the writing wasn't as good, I think. Possibly, it would have read fine if they hadn't changed the narrator. Even though he was good, and the narrator for the previous volumes had his weaknesses, it's always difficult transitioning from one voice to another mid-series. Whatever the specific reason, this is, for me, the weakest entry so far, but I still enjoyed it.

I was initially disappointed because Volume 4 returns to the collected short story by various author format of the first couple of volumes, whereas Volume 3 featured a novel-length story by Josh Reynolds. This would be fine, except that he left the impression that Jim Anthony hadn't yet seen the end of that particular menace, and I was hoping for a continuation in this volume. Alas, that was not the case. Still, these four stories are entertaining additions to the exploits of Jim Anthony, with the first possibly being the weakest, and the third the strongest. My opinion of the narrator hasn't changed. He is an excellent reader, but renders poor character voices, and has no talent for accents. This last is particularly damaging to the listening experience as each story tends to include characters of varrying nationalities and/or ethnic backgrounds with distinctive accents... Oh well...it could be worse... Onto Volume 5!

Another good entry in the series, possibly the best yet. Eager to see the next development in his battle with this apparently continuing threat. Narration is goodish, but with the usual drawbacks... Onto the next volume!
