Trope on trope
Revisado: 04-12-25
Narrator does a great job.
Beyond that, the story doesn't have much going for it. There are a couple of interesting ideas, but it doesn't handle the scope of the galaxy well at all. Characters are 1 dimensional, then they're dead.
I like female main characters in military situations, so that's a good point. But there isn't really anything likable, unlikable, or compelling about this one. She's just kind of there to take up space while the story moves her around like a garden gnome in the yard.
No spoilers, but the ending is pretty predictable. Just think "Kaiser Soze".

Historia
The man known as Cheradenine Zakalwe was one of Special Circumstances' foremost agents, changing the destiny of planets to suit the Culture through intrigue, dirty tricks, and military action. The woman known as Diziet Sma had plucked him from obscurity and pushed him toward his present eminence, but despite all their dealings she did not know him as well as she thought. The drone known as Skaffen-Amtiskaw knew both of these people. It had once saved the woman's life by massacring her attackers in a particularly bloody manner. It believed the man to be a lost cause.

Not Ian Banks best book
Revisado: 04-07-25
This particular book is just a lot of words. Other Banks novels are much more focused and more story like. This particular book works better as a physical novel. The narration is fine, but the story itself wanders over so many perspectives it doesn't translate to audio very well.
I read the entire culture series as a kid, and where I still remember critical moments from other books, I've remembered absolutely nothing from this one.

Can't recommend this
Revisado: 04-05-25
The story is basic. So many tropes. Characters are illogical and 2-dimensional.
The narrator isn't bad. He's just doing the story as written. But that means characters are always overly dramatic and the narrator is meeting what he reads. But it's annoying at many points. I think other better stories would do him well. But the story really brings down his performance and range.

Story just isn't interesting
Revisado: 03-18-25
I think I'm about 4 hours to the end. I'm pretty done.
I always want to like Neil Geiman but these stories always just drag on and on.
As a counter example I listened to Water Moon right before this and loved it. JP to EN translation, great urban fantasy, on point, and didn't dally.
This book just keeps draaaaging.
It's not bad, but at some point, just get to the point and wrap it up. A lot of Geiman's books are like this. Like Sandman.

Derivative and shallow
Revisado: 01-23-25
Another affirmation of why I don't like this author's books.
The characters are flat and predictable. Characters have awful naming. The plot is reductive and derivative.
The narrator at least makes the listening experience bearable. Did the best they could with a really terrible story.
Jeesh telepathic space dogs and humans that are somehow part space dog. Whole thing is gross.
Then at the end when you think the good/bad guys are known, yet another big bad gets introduced that somehow the previous big bad is against now and wants to work with the good guys. This plot device never works. Especially when the new big bad is completely unknown until the end of the book. And it's a HIM where early in the book it's established the bads are all female clones.
Book is infuriatingly bad and predictable.

Typically bad King
Revisado: 12-16-24
I know it's an old book but dealing with 2+ books of the African American character parody just got so repetitive. That's forgivable, but the overall story is boring as crap and just spends too much time navel gazing and meandering.
Only decided to given Dark Tower a try because it's supposed to be his best work. It leaves a lot lacking and isn't much different than any other tripe he's typed out over the years.
Anyway, was worth the effort but not worth the time.

How is it already inhabited by humans when they did not evolve there? Castaway Joseph Colsco, now known as Yozef Kolsco, gradually finds himself at the center of resistance to an empire with ambitions to rule the world by any means necessary: Narthon.

Another great entry to the series. Has been long awaited.
Love the narrator. My only wish is that Mr Davis really needs to work on consistent character voices and place name pronunciations. This has been a problem in the last three books. Different characters sound entirely different than they have in previous books. Even at one point in this book one of the Yosef's kids suddenly sounds like a gruff old man briefly. Gaya has been the same voice for the entire series but now he has lost the accent he's had the entire time.
Otherwise no complaints.

One of my fav series
Revisado: 10-04-24
This is the only series of books that are just about people in space. No crazy aliens or conspiracies or whatever. Just following Ishmael's life over the decades as he navigates through his life as a spacer. Lot of people are probably bored by it, but I really like it. It's unique in how it's just a story about someone's life.
Very happy with how this book ends. If you've read the end of Mountain Man with Gus, there's a similarity there. Though this isn't the end of Ishmael's story, and Gus finally gets the peace he deserves.
Highly recommend. Highly highly.
Thanks Nathan Lowell. You've created an incredibly interesting universe. Parts of the time I really want to know more about the outside universe, like maybe having some characters join an exploratory division or have one people decide to try to reach Earth. But I respect that you're keeping the scope of the story tight and gradually revealing more background. Makes all the ongoing threads very interesting.

They are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species. Overall good
Revisado: 09-05-24
Really like the narrator. Story is decent.
Main issue is with audio quality. The volume of the narrator constantly gets too soft or too loud. Its almost like the narrator kept getting close and away from the microphone throughout the entire thing.
If Ms. Okoye ever happens to read this, you're doing a great job but this is kind of an important thing you should address in your next book.
