Historia
Loretta Pacheco has a cool job at an electric car company. Her life finally seems headed in the right direction. But in a flash, it all starts to fall apart. What were the strange voices she heard as she lay injured by the side of the road? Why, exactly, did two young boys disappear all those years ago? And what is this strange sound in her head?

Distracting sound effects that overwhelmed the storytelling.
Revisado: 03-23-25
Garbage production values that purportedly enhanced the audio but really just confused things and made it hard to catch some important dialog. Sound that constantly shifted from right to left channel and back again for no apparent reason (other than the Sound engineer deciding that they could do it) was seriously distracting. The story was long in the setup and disappointing in the culmination. The constant Spanglish dialog combined with tinny and distorted sound made comprehension more complex than necessary. Overall one of the worst Audible titles I've ever listened to, and I've been an avid listener for over 15 years. Don't waste your time on this one.

Historia
In this epic history of extermination and survival, Timothy Snyder presents a new explanation of the great atrocity of the twentieth century, and reveals the risks that we face in the twenty-first. Based on untapped sources from eastern Europe and forgotten testimonies from Jewish survivors, Black Earth recounts the mass murder of the Jews as an event that is still close to us, more comprehensible than we would like to think and thus all the more terrifying.

Close look at what allowed the holocaust to happen
Revisado: 11-08-22
A straightforward historical record of the conditions in each country central to the holocaust as they entered the years leading up to and during WWII. As precise and detailed as it is disturbing, Snyder's deep dive takes you down the path taken into humanity's greatest horrors, all without sensationalizing or preaching.

The first 2/3's of the book was excellent
Revisado: 06-20-22
... the remainder was, umm, less so. When Hill veered into an endless polemic on providing the socially and geographically disadvantaged with a helping hand through govermental and structural changes, the book lost all its momentum and left a sour taste. Don't get me wrong - she's right on nearly all the points she was making; it's just the wrong book in which to be making them.
It's a book worth reading/listening to, but feel free to stop shortly after the switch over begins (and never goes back). You'll understand her point long before it gets to the end.

Poor follow up
Revisado: 06-26-21
Seemed like just an excuse to pack in as many 1980's references as possible in a weak storyline made worse by an anticlimactic wrap up. I suppose it's worth reading if you want to continue the character story arc, but don't spend much to do it.
Wil Wheaton was terrific except for a bad decision to attempt a female british accent.

Historia
Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.
