Historia
Meet Jessica Jones: retired superhero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crimefighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK.

okay

I was really excited about this because I miss the Jessica Jones show. But I didn't live this. I am not sure Lisa Jewell was the right writer for it. She never captured Jessica's voice to me. But if you pretend they are original characters it's a fine paranormal mystery.

great
Revisado: 01-08-23
Octavia Butler is so perceptive about human beings. She (and Dana) seem to see the good parts of all humans. She makes you understand why Rufus is how he is--not that I agree with his choices. and I guess that is what it is to be kin(dred), to see the good and the bad and still feel love.
a beautifully written yet traumatic portrait of a real American family.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

I was too old for iCarly so this is my introduction to Ms. McCurdy. She had it real tough but seems to have come out with humor and grace.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

This is an okay introduction into a historical figure I knew nothing about. I couldn’t help thinking his role in the war deserved a bit more mention, it’s played as less important than his boxing.

Inside Michael’s craft supply store, cashier Ann Chapman rings up another customer. Then it happens. A loud crack; a gust of wind; the light in register five goes dark. Over the next 23 days, the entire DC area will be thrust into a reign of terror unprecedented in American history. Sniper attacks targeting and murdering everyday citizens will bring the entire region to its knees as a nation still reeling from the recent attacks of 9/11 and the anthrax scare is forced to confront a new type of brutal assault - this time in their own backyard.

Should have been a podcast
Revisado: 11-28-19
What I liked about this title was that it allowed victims and their family members to speak. I liked hearing their own words because I think too many true crime books focus on the perpetrators.
I didn’t like the sound design at all. There is too much music in between chapters (was it supposed to be a podcast and that’s where the ads would be?) I also really wanted a bit more narrator or at least some reminders of who was speaking, because I had a difficult time telling some of the voices apart, particularly the two brothers who wrote the damn thing.
There are probably better books on this subject.

Historia
It was a moment unique in human history: the face-to-face meeting between two men from civilizations a world apart. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico, determined not only to expand the Spanish empire but to convert the natives to Catholicism and carry off a fortune in gold. That he saw nothing paradoxical in his intentions is one of the most remarkable and tragic aspects of this unforgettable story.

A slog
Revisado: 11-12-19
I got this in the Hispanic Heritage month sale. It took me about a month to get through it. I don’t know much about the conquest of Mexico but this seemed one-sided, focusing mainly on Hernan Cortes (who the author refers to as an unquestionable “genius”) despite reference to Aztec sources. I would have liked to know more about the cultures and peoples the Spanish killed, because those are the culture I don’t know about. This felt like a long recitation of his time in “New Spain” with frequent quotes from Cortes’ own papers, all of which is done in a SUPER WEIRD accent by the narrator. I am surprised this was offered for Hispanic Heritage Month now. I would think the continued reference to “Indians” would be enough for it to be considered out-dated, bordering on offensive.

Audie Award, Humor, 2016. In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Meh
Revisado: 10-12-19
A friend recommended this to me because I have many mental illnesses. I think I should have read her memoir because I prefer narrative and I found the skipping around of chapters jarring. Mostly I was jealous she has turned her problems into a career and I just have bills I can’t pay.

Historia
In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons can be whomever they choose. Tess is none of these things. Tess is...different. She speaks out of turn, has wild ideas, and can't seem to keep out of trouble. Then Tess goes too far. Tess's family decide the only path for her is a nunnery. But on the day she is to join the nuns, Tess chooses a different path for herself. She cuts her hair, pulls on her boots, and sets out on a journey. She's not running away, she's running towards something.

Not a stand alone
Revisado: 09-14-19
I haven’t read “Serafina” but I thought I read this was just set in the same world and could stand alone. There is certainly a lot to like, but it felt like a series of vignettes and never quite built up to a satisfying conclusion. When Tess is finally dealing with her emotional issues, after confronting the end of her quest, we come across a character from the first book that I didn’t know at all and that is supposed to mean something? Also, there was never resolution with Will and I feel like that will happen in another book which means this isn’t a stand alone on either front, and I felt very dissatisfied with the narrative arc.

Historia
American-born 17-year-old Maya Aziz is torn between worlds. There's the proper one her parents expect for their good Indian daughter: attending a college close to their suburban Chicago home and being paired off with an older Muslim boy who's "suitable" to her mother. And then there is the world of her dreams: going to film school and living in New York City - and maybe, just maybe, pursuing a boy she's known from afar her entire life who's suddenly falling into her orbit at school.

I liked this book and the main character but I wish the author had done mor with the character's love of making documentaries. Films can express our inner feelings and I would've loved to see that either with being harassed at school or as a way to communicate with her parents.
