Thoroughly interesting overview C20th history

Very interesting and accessible history by an eminent historian who lived through much if it. A very instructive antidote to history as the accumulation of acts of great men. Hobsbawm gets under the History Channel's tales of daring-do and grapples with the technological, sociological and economic factors that drove the superficial changes.

Brilliant, vital scientific treatise for our times

Initially published 40 years ago EO Wilson's On Nature sustains an argument whose resolution weighs so much more heavily on us today. Wilson argues that human cultures are all expressions of (that is, are animated and constrained by) human nature, and that human nature is the product of human biology and of Darwinian evolution. He concludes that we would all be better off unifying or at least combining the humanities (social sciences) and biology to understand our cultures, and decide our collective future.

Marvelous book.

Definitive history of early WWI

The definitive history of perhaps the most pivotal 30 days of the 20th Century. Why did WWI bog down in trench warfare and stalemate? How could military and national leaders have been so dull and inflexible? Tuchman's account of the period late July through early September lays out the history without grand-standing or axe-grinding.

A book that will challenge your dogmatic slumbers. Or at least, it will challenge the slumber of those who willing to have their perspectives altered by evidence and argument. Not a book for the fundamentalist or orthodox mind.

Terrific adventure story! Life in the age of sail.

Story has everything. Politics, intrigue, adventure, economics, multiple mutinies, a marooning, shipwrecks, scurvy and disaster. We're all told about Magellan's voyage. But here it is in salt, blood and spices.

Book about St Helens kinda ignores the volcano

Book about the social and cultural context behind the events of the St Helens eruption. Interesting in its own way, but didn't satisfy my curiosity about what we knew/now know about the history and future of the cascade volcanoes.

Thoroughly enjoyed this amble through archeology. Covers history of archeology, overview of basic techniques, and a sample of interesting and important digs from the early days of academic archeology to very recent discoveries.
