Stunning and beautiful
Revisado: 01-21-23
Baldwin so perfectly captures life as a queer person in the mid 20th century. He expounds on poverty and double standards and weaves his own thoughts and desires throughout. An essential piece of LGBTQ history and literature

Required reading for Queers and Allies
Revisado: 03-31-21
This memoir was absolutely excellent. The story is well written and weaves through the many elements of Samra’s identity. It is also incredibly relevant and important during this time as western civilization faces a fresh wave of Islamophobia.
The narrator did an excellent job as well and the story moves at a crisp yet engaging pace.

Fantastic History of American Christian Fundamentalism
Revisado: 09-01-19
As a former fundamentalist I found this history exceptionally insightful. Not only is the book well written and engagingly narrated, the research is thorough and substantial. Presented in an almost true crime fashion, this book is a must for any student of religion and politics.

Historia
In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as one long and remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."

In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

Well read and creatively written. I especially enjoyed the history at the end. I'd recommend for anyone wanting a basic idea of Norse mythology. I'd even read it to children 10 and older.
