Compelling facts and sober presentation
Revisado: 05-05-25
I am genuinely grateful for Professor Janney’s excellent summary of key aspects of the American Civil War. I have read a number of books and academic articles on this pivotal and tragic episode in our national history. I’ve also watched a couple of documentaries on this topic. Unfortunately much of what I come across seems excessively charged with emotion, biased or exceedingly dense and drawn-out. In contrast, Professor Janney provides a balanced and straightforward analysis in a series of succinct stimulating lectures. She convincingly describes why the war was fought and what each side thought the war was really about. She presents important insights into the way the fighting unfolded and she shares keen observations on how this war shaped the United States to the present. This is a truly worthwhile course.

Music is everywhere at Christmas - chart toppers, carols, children's tunes. Alistair Begg takes us to four songs that were sung by people at the very first Christmas (and his favorite carol). In this short, winsome book, a teenage girl, a respected priest, a group of angels, and an old man bring listeners to the heart of Christmas, showing them the joy and peace that comes from meeting a baby who lay in the food trough and changed eternity.

Great way to prepare for Xmas
Revisado: 12-02-24
This succinct review of Saint Luke’s nativity account highlights key themes to ponder ahead of tbe Christmas celebration. The title had led me to expect something entirely different, but I was not disappointed. It was truly inspired and filled me with the love of Our Lord Jesus. God bless the author. Just one discordant note: Allister, don’t be so sure that Our Lady sinned.

I got this audiobook to listen to during my trip to France. I thought it would be entertaining and provide some distraction if I ever had to wait in line at a museum or train station, etc. It was well beyond my expectations. I learned so much about France, Europe and events that shaped the modern world. Definitely a worthwhile book.

Historia
A century before Britain became involved in this terrible business, whole villages and towns in European countries were being depopulated by slavers, who transported the men, women, and children to Africa, where they were sold. This is the forgotten slave trade, one which saw over a million Christians forced into captivity in the Muslim world. Starting in the ancient world, Simon Webb traces the history of slavery in Europe, showing that the numbers involved were vast and that the victims were often treated far more cruelly than black slaves in America and the Caribbean.

So Much I Didn’t Know
Revisado: 10-20-24
This is a gripping account of a topic barely mentioned in most history classes. Beyond describing the prolonged experience of the slave trade of Europeans, it presents a detailed history of the practice of slavery around the world and among many societies over time. I consider myself a student of history but this is a chapter I must admit I knew very little about. Mr. Webb’s excellent work has really opened my eyes and taught me so much. I am forever grateful.

Historia
Based on the major motion picture, The Nativity Story is the very human, very dramatic, and uniquely inspiring saga of a journey of faith. This moving novelization tells the extraordinary tale of two common people, Mary and Joseph, a miraculous pregnancy, an arduous journey, and the history-defining birth of Jesus. Brought to life with an unprecedented attention to detail and commitment to historical accuracy, Hunt tells how, from humble beginnings, great things can come.

Revisado: 10-20-24
This is a very predictable and somewhat dull approach to the nativity narrative. The gospels’ account of the incarnation of our Savior is such a powerful and moving story that even this uninspired version is tolerable. For a truly beautiful and compelling treatment of the nativity try Scott Hahn’s “Joy to the World: How Christ’s Coming Changed Everything…”

Historia
War can settle disputes, topple tyrants, and bend the trajectory of civilization—sometimes to the breaking point. From Troy to Hiroshima, moments when war has ended in utter annihilation have reverberated through the centuries, signaling the end of political systems, cultures, and epochs. Though much has changed over the millennia, human nature remains the same. In The End of Everything, military historian Victor Davis Hanson narrates a series of sieges and sackings that span the age of antiquity to the conquest of the New World to show how societies descend into barbarism and obliteration.

Pain and despair
Revisado: 06-10-24
VDH brilliantly describes the violent annihilation of four very different urban societies across diverse historical periods. Together they present a cautionary tale for contemporary humanity, particularly since most of us now live in urban agglomerations. Unfortunately, the book does not suggest any remedies to prevent this in the future. Actually, the epilogue soberly presents several current situations around the world that could devolve into this kind of tragedy. Still, it’s a fascinating if sad account, certainly worthwhile.

We humans are the inheritors of a dynasty that has reigned over the planet for nearly 66 million years, through fiery cataclysm and ice ages: the mammals. Our lineage includes saber-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, armadillos the size of a car, cave bears three times the weight of a grizzly, clever scurriers that outlasted Tyrannosaurus rex, and even other types of humans, like Neanderthals.

Cut the woke proselytizing
Revisado: 01-28-24
Since childhood, I found the emergence of mammals a fascinating topic. I am not a zoologist, but I am familiar with prior works like this. To his credit, the author of this book presents several exciting new findings from DNA and fossil research. He also lays out compelling novel explanations of material I had encountered in other readings on mammal evolution. However, his repeated digression into ideological matters does get insufferable. Do we really need to be told again and again that European settlement was “brutal”? He also exerts himself to celebrate and compliment the scientific achievements and contributions of women and non-Western communities in a manner that borders on the ridiculous. Is any of this really necessary? Please cut out the woke proselytizing already!

Historia
Since he was a small boy, Mosab Hassan Yousef has had an inside view of the deadly terrorist group Hamas. The oldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founding member of Hamas and its most popular leader, young Mosab assisted his father for years in his political activities while being groomed to assume his legacy, politics, status...and power. But everything changed when Mosab turned away from terror and violence and embraced instead the teachings of another famous Middle East leader.

Revisado: 11-14-23
This is such a moving story. Since Hamas’ barbaric attack on innocent Israeli civilians barely a month ago, I have struggled with very ugly feelings toward the so called Palestinian cause. Reading this memoir, however, has helped calm these feelings. It must be a nightmare to live under the corrupt and pernicious rule of the Palestinian authorities (Hamas or the PA). Having to endure sporadic retaliation by fearful and suspicious Israeli government entities must make the situation that much harder. However, Mosab’s story offers a glimmer of hope. As a Christian and a father, I sincerely pray that Mosab’s Muslim parents will be reconciled to his decision to follow Jesus. I realize that this must be painful for them. After reading his story, I believe their good example and self-sacrifice laid the foundation for the kind of man he has become—a man of faith and integrity. God bless Mosab and his family, and may reconciliation and peace come soon to the people of the Holy Land.

Historia
In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order “to make known the figure and message of Jesus”. Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary.
