Historia
Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It’s 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwell’s 1984.

The sentence-level writing is good, but the novel still undermines the original in a variety of frustrating ways.

The planet Quinta is pocked by ugly mounds and covered by a spiderweb-like network. It is a kingdom of phantoms and of a beauty afflicted by madness. In stark contrast, the crew of the spaceship Hermes represents a knowledge-seeking Earth. As they approach Quinta, a dark poetry takes over and leads them into a nightmare of misunderstanding.

interesting, but not as good as solaris
Revisado: 08-18-19
not a bad book at all really. fairly characteristic of lem. long passages that read like hard science, minimal characterization, extreme skepticism about interpersonal communication. just feels like he's only got this one note, though. you get essentially the same experience reading his other novels.

Historia
In 1349, one small town in Germany disappeared and was never resettled. Tom, a contemporary historian, and his theoretical-physicist girlfriend, Sharon, become interested. By all logic, the town should have survived, but it didn't. Why? What was special about Eifelheim that it utterly disappeared more than 600 years ago?

Historia
Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb.

Pretty hilarious. An exploration of the hybridity of identity. Told as a version of the myth of Theseus. Kind of a difficult book, but certainly worth it.

Historia
Pyotr Kropotkin (1842-1921), one of the most individual political figures of his time, is best known as an influential anarchist communist. But he was also a scientist, geographer and philosopher, a man who, having grown up on his aristocratic father’s extensive country estate in Russia, had a deep understanding of and love for animals (wild and domesticated), the countryside and wildernesses. And all this was underpinned by a life committed to work for the good of humanity.

Pretty fascinating work of social history. Traces the path of mutual aid at work in human societies since the first peoples. makes an excellent case for the idea that solidarity is a natural feature of human existence. even examines the rise of centralized capitalist power structures.
also, very classy narrator.

Utopia for Realists is one of those rare books that takes you by surprise and challenges what you think can happen. From a Canadian city that once completely eradicated poverty to Richard Nixon's near implementation of a basic income for millions of Americans, Bregman takes us on a journey through history and beyond the traditional left-right divides as he champions ideas whose time has come.

Incomplete without Marxian analysis.
Revisado: 05-18-19
There's something very frustrating about this book, and it's the fact that the author can't seem to grasp that the social ills he seeks remedies for are the inevitable result of capitalism. While bemoaning poverty and inequality, he expresses admiration for Milton Friedman, among other arch-capitalist thinkers. He wants to redistribute wealth, but doesn't advocate worker ownership of business, which is the only way wealth redistribution is ever going to work. Not really a coherent analysis of how we'd ever arrive at his proposed solutions.

Historia
Galapagos takes the listener back one million years to AD 1986. A simple vacation cruise suddenly becomes an evolutionary journey. Thanks to an apocalypse, a small group of survivors stranded on the Galapagos Islands are about to become the progenitors of a brave, new, totally different human race. Kurt Vonnegut, America's master satirist, looks at our world and shows us all that is sadly, madly awry - and all that is worth saving.

Pretty entertaining.
Revisado: 05-10-19
Super funny and very engaging. Not quite as cohesive as some of Vonnegut's other works, such as Mother Night or The Sirens of Titan, but still an absolutely humorous exploration of the subject of natural selection. Jonathan Davis' narration is good--but the timbre of his voice isn't quite right for the subject matter. The proses comes off sounding a little more serious than I expect it should. Still, overall a great read (or rather, listen).

Historia
From the acclaimed PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize-winning author of A Naked Singularity, a shockingly hilarious novel that tackles, with equal aplomb, both America’s most popular sport and its criminal justice system. From Paterson, New Jersey, to Rikers Island to the streets of New York, Sergio de la Pava’s Lost Empress introduces listeners to a cast of characters unlike any other in modern fiction: dreamers and exiles, immigrants and night-shift workers, a lonely pastor and others on the fringes of society - each with their own impact on the fragile universe they navigate.

Very entertaining novel. Excellent full narration cast. Super puzzling ending. Not sure how it shapes the rest of the novel. But its musings on the criminal justice system and on the nature of time are superb.
