This is a wonderfully whimsical take on the Biblical apocalypse. The plot doesn’t take as many twists as your typical Neil Gaiman novel, but his straight faced humor is paramount. I’m not familiar with Pratchett, but they seem to make a great team. Lovable characters, and I think it would be enjoyable for both Christian’s and non-Christian’s alike.

A world of gods all immigrants in America

This book is a wonderful story that is part murder mystery, part fantasy, part realism. It’s a way to describe America using the metaphor of the gods that people brought over with them. The current state of each god reflects America’s current belief in them and the sacrifices made to them. Shadow is an infinitely interesting character who we learn much about, but who at his core is a good listener, kind hearted, and has an instinct for how to do the right thing. He navigates the world of the gods so well because of his intrinsic belief that you’re supposed to do what is right. I really enjoyed this novel. It’s the first Neil Gaiman book I’ve ever read, and now I’m suddenly obsessed.

Awesome as part of Cosmere or as stand alone

I enjoyed this book more than Elantris, the other stand alone Cosmere novel. I loved all of the characters on both sides, and love the typical Sanderson tricks that things are not always as they seem. If you’re into the Cosmere, you’ll enjoy some crossover characters’ appearances. Strong, well-written female characters as well.

Metaphysical philosophy in a novel

Vita Nostra is the story of a 16-18 girl, Sasha, who is forced by her fear to attend a school that is intentionally vague in its purpose. She is guided through a metaphysical transformation that is loosely explained with Plato’s allegory of the cave with the shadows. It’s a mind bending experience that leaves you doubting whether you have grasped the entire meaning of the final scene. I gave it only 4 stars because of how artfully baffling the ending felt, but I suspect as I sit with my discomfort, I’ll begin to like it more and eventually get to 5 stars.

Loved the narrator and her 3rd person perspective which worked very well. I found the every-day Russian culture to be very interesting and believably depicted (the book having been written by Russians and translated to English from Russia.) found the Narrator’s struggle in her changing relationship with her mother to be very believable and f a m I i I a r. Loved the philosophy connection with Plato. I definitely enjoyed following her in her discovery of what her transformation would look like. The translation was very good and felt natural, and the metaphors were always spot on and not forced.

I definitely recommend this novel for any older fans of Harry Potter as long as you’re up for an ending that you have to sit with for a while to feel satisfied. (Also, fellow parents, there is some kissing and making out with a bra off, also discussion of sex, virginity (in what i assume to be a Russian sensibility))

This second installment of the serpentine Academy novel series was an excellent follow up to novice. Ilith, A young orphan girl from the north who has come south to become an apprentice dragoneer at the Serpentine receives a commission to return back to the North. She continues to meet new people who underestimate her because of a stutter, and she continues to follow her strong instincts to make her way through the commission. She also has a strong work ethic and a passion for dragons, and this helps her much along the way. The world building is solid, and I like that there continue to be other nations who have relationships with the republic. She eats some delicious food along the way (hoping Knight comes out with a companion Cookbook of the Republic lol). Also, some very fun imagery. I’ll be looking for some fan art on the costuming and dragon rigging and the Rari. If you like dragons, solid world-crafting and strong female leads, this series is highly recommended.

The universe of the novels following the original trilogy is very cool. The story have a lot of western character clichés. In my opinion, this was not nearly as good as the original series

If you enjoy negative utopian society books, you must read this novel. It was so enjoyable and interesting and thoughtful. It really delved deeply into the psyche of someone in her situation, and it made it feel so real!

Captivating. Weird choice to make the Underground Railroad literally a Railroad since the rest was historically accurate.
