Historia
When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success.

Aggravating - Second time read, can't pass chap 11
Revisado: 04-04-25
I've tried to read this book TWICE now. The first time I stopped on chapter 11. Then after a year or so I decided to give it another chance because I read Horrorstor and it was actually pretty good. I started again with How to Sell a Haunted House and, without noticing it, I started giving up AGAIN at the exact same chapter because Mark is the most aggravating character I've ever read. And I can't stand how unfair things are for his sister. I hate people like that so much, I can't just keep reading.
Also the endless lists of everything about their mother. I also hate that character so much. Too many dislikable characters, too much unfairness, not a single drop of suspense or horror or scary stuff up to chapter 11.
I'm not finishing it again. Excessive bickering and drama for a scary book. Pity. I enjoy this author's books.

If it wasn’t for the ending. Too cop friendly. Kinda missed the entire point of the plot. Shame.

Great easy story / bad rushed ending
Revisado: 08-07-24
Very nice and the suspense was so well built. Good writing, nothing fancy but nothing crude. Good pacing and fun well written characters. The mystery was very cool and the development too, and it WAS scary. The paranormal events are very well done.
My only complaint is the ending. It felt so rushed. I don't know if the writer had to wrap it up and get to her due date, but the story fell apart and a very fast end came up that made little sense. It was fast and ruined the pace of the book. So sad. It's a good book, just don't know what happened with that end.

Could have been a short story
Revisado: 08-07-24
If short story, it would be great. He's a very talented writer and clever funny kind of guy. But after 1/3 of it, I could not pay attention anymore. Definitely not for me. But yes, the bloke can write so well, it was a very nice "read/listen" until it was way too much and too long and saying the same things over and over again.

Great story - Amazing narrator
Revisado: 11-07-23
Loved the story, beautifully paced. The characters had so much to them through the main character’s eyes. The build up until breaking point was palpable. I felt myself growing angry at times with the main character. Excellent. And the performance was jaw-dropping wonderful. Amazing. I wish all books were narrated by Susan Bennett. What talent. I wonder what kind of read this would be without her, without audio book. I wonder if she brought this story to life in a way the author might not even have expected.
Fully enjoyed this! Will read more from Nat, will listen more from Susan.

Historia
When Cora Seaborne's brilliant, domineering husband dies, she steps into her new life as a widow with as much relief as sadness: her marriage was not a happy one. Wed at 19, this woman of exceptional intelligence and curiosity was ill-suited for the role of society wife. Seeking refuge in fresh air and open space in the wake of the funeral, Cora leaves London for a visit to coastal Essex, accompanied by her inquisitive and obsessive 11-year old son, Francis, and the boy's nanny, Martha.

Very Stephen King-esque!
Revisado: 03-12-21
I enjoyed it a lot. Did not see what was coming at all.
The characters are so well developed. The biggest part of the book is a delightfully mysterious build up. Very creepy imagery, but most of the characters are very likable so there's a bitter-sweetness about it.
The author said in an interview that he changed the end because of a reaction by Emma Watson when he shared this story with her a while ago. She wasn't impressed by his first ending so he changed it. I wonder what that was... hmmm...

A mess of important big events in the end. Very badly explained and rushed.
Too much packed in a book. I suppose this is the last book. I have no idea what will be accomplished in a 3rd.

Historia
The definitive biography of Edward Gorey, the eccentric master of macabre nonsense. From The Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey's wickedly funny and deliciously sinister little books have influenced our culture in innumerable ways, from the works of Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman to Lemony Snicket. Some even call him the Grandfather of Goth. An eccentric, a gregarious recluse, an enigmatic auteur of whimsically morbid masterpieces, yes - but who was the real Edward Gorey behind the Oscar Wildean pose?

Gorey is amazing but...
Revisado: 07-26-19
But he really didn't need the longest wikipedia in history about him, obsessively repetitive about his sexuality to a creepy degree.
It was a very enjoyable read at first... well written, interesting facts and interviews. Then it drags forever and repeats constantly, as if the author wanted to dig some secret trauma from Gorey's sexuality privacy.
Tedious read to the very end.

Historia
God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers.
