I've enjoyed all of the Kate Dawson books, and this one is exceptional. Inspector Dawson is up against a sex-trafficking cabal, and if she is not able to stop them, then the latest G-20 Conference will suffer. Fabulous Book. Very Suspenseful.

John Flynn is an exceptional writer, with a narrative style that is very likely the envy of all his competitors. That exceptional, narrative style is on display here with a handful of truly memorable short stories as Flynn hopscotches between the various genres of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mystery. Visions in Light & Shadow introduces readers to Rupert, a robot tending the last remaining library, thousands of years after man vanished off the face of the earth; the Jovians, an alien species fighting to protect their home on Jupiter from greedy developers who want to mine their world dry of a rare energy source; seven-year-old Martha Goodman who develops a "gift" of verse; the last remaining vampire on the "day after" a nuclear holocaust, and a number of other protagonists in visionary, sometimes hostile and chilling worlds of tomorrow. Pick any story from the table of contents, and listen as Geoffrey Boyes adds to the magic with his winning vocal talents. Any one of those stories would fit nicely in Rod Serling's Twilight Zone or Joe Stefano's Outer Limits. There was a time, not that long ago, when short stories ruled the marketplace, and writers like Ray Bradbury were king. Today, it seems, writers have forgotten how to write the short story, and instead channel their limited talents into telling overly-bloated tales that simply don't merit a novel. Flynn earned multiple Hugo nominations, writing short stories of incredible complexity and characterization that when he made the switch to writing novels, he has produced one bestseller after another. He still writes incredibly complex novels that are populated with richly developed characters against a highly-detailed background. He spent the time writing short, so that he could write write exceptional novels. Thank you, Audible, for publishing this audio book, and giving us a look behind the scenes of one of today's best writers.

Characters are real, and absolutely the most believable characters in any novel. The plot is very fast, with plenty of twists and turns to make it one the best of the Kate Dawson thrillers. John Flynn does it again! Thanks, Audible, for publishing the signature novel in the series as an audio book..

Architects of Armageddon is the second book in the Kate Dawson thriller series, but can be listened to in any order. I have listened to two other books in the series, and I just love the main character, Kate Dawson, a gutsy female homicide detective with the San Francisco Police Department. When the story opens, she is suffering from her ordeal with a serial killer and ill-prepared for a new case which involves a murder-suicide. Some cultist has murdered her five children by hanging them from a tree like ornaments in her backyard, then killed herself. The murder-suicide is shocking, to say the least. Almost as shocking as Kate's nightmares about her previous case. Broken and battered, she pursues clues to the murder-suicide to a religious cult obsessed with the end of the world. Thanks to a clever make-up artist, Dawson goes undercover as an old woman, and learns the group plans to use an atomic bomb to destroy the City of San Francisco and blame the destruction on a Muslim terrorist cell working in Oakland. The plot may seem a little outrageous and over-the-top, but Author Flynn's great writing and excellent research details make it seem all the more compelling and real. Of course, at the heart of the story is a remarkable tale of one woman's quest to heal herself and stop the bad guys. Several other critics have written this book is about redemption and salvation, and while there are clearly those elements at work, this is really a work of female empowerment, facing down obstacles that have been put in her path and succeeding despite the fact that things are stacked against her. Kate's infiltration of the cultist compound is one of the great set-pieces of the novel, wringing as much spine-tingling suspense as possible from her incursion. At every turn, I expected someone was going to jump out at her, and kill her or capture her, but the author delays the inevitable, building up even more tension. Ultimately, when the bay guys behind the plot do emerge, I was surprised by their motives. The "architects" of Armageddon are far more sinister than they appear, and Kate Dawson's confrontation with them highlights Flynn's excellent narrative writing. Cudos also go out to Kevin Chamber's sympathetic narration. He's one to watch in the future, and I do hope he gets the assignment to narrative another one of Flynn's books. Please pick up this new audio book. It is filled with spine-tingling suspense and great writing.

I had a recent six-hour flight, and this audio book was better than most of the available movies. In fact, The Jovian Dilemma should be made into a big-budget sci-fi movie. Clearly better than Ad Astra. I liked the action, the deep psychological and environmental underpinnings of the story, and the message from the author about climate change. Perfect audio book for a long flight or a long drive. Thanks!

Wickedly, Decadent Thriller!

Revisado: 09-15-19

From the opening lines of this brand new audio book, Intimate Bondage by John Flynn, it's impossible not to get sucked into this wickedly decadent thriller about a serial killer, nicknamed the "angel of death," stalking her victims in San Francisco's fetish underground and the broken detective who must pull herself back together again in order to stop the killing. Do people really live like this? Well, I guess they do, and the many details about their BDSM lifestyle make our hero's journey into Dante's ninth circle of hell all the more interesting and dangerous as she goes. I must admit that I fell in love with Kate Dawson and the spiritual nature of her quest to make amends for the loss of her daughter as well as those others who keep dropping dead around her. This is a murder mystery that tops all other murder mysteries. I doubt seriously if you will see the end coming until narrator Chaz Allen says "the end." I thought the writing style was very entertaining. The overall plot was complex, with its detail, local color and descriptions, but not overly complicated to keep you from guessing. A great book. Very entertaining. So good, in fact, I plan on buying all the audio books featuring Kate Dawson.

I would like to rate this audio book 5 Stars! The story started out with a real bang. How else can I describe the shooting of a police officer and the deaths of passengers aboard a subway car? But then, as the police investigation gets rolling into the two disparate crimes, the level of suspense and tension increases. I pride myself on being one step ahead of most mystery writers, but alas, I was surprised by each turn of the plot. I was pleasantly surprised. The narrator's performance was above average. I really liked how he captured each character with a different inflection in his voice. Expertly done. Overall, I have lots of praise for this audio book. Never a dull moment or spot in the narrative where I wanted to fast-forward. Since I bought this audio book, I will be listening to it again and again. Like a well-loved book or movie. 5 Stars!
