“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

What happened to the chapter titles
Revisado: 05-25-24
I’ve read/listened to five or six stories so far. Narration is great. Stories are ranging from great while some are just ok some like red screen are not good. When I first downloaded the title it showed the name of each story title and chapter breaks. Now it just has 100+ chapters. Why did the story titles disappear I didn’t remove the audio file. I did try removing it and downloading it again but just chapter numbers listed. Hopefully Audible sees this and reinserts the story titles. Thx.

Historia
A classic novel by John D. MacDonald with an exclusive introduction written and read by Dean Koontz. An insane criminal threatens to destroy a family, and the police are powerless to protect them. For 14 years convicted rapist Max Cady nursed his hatred for Sam Bowden into an insane passion for revenge. He lived only for the day he would be free - free to track down and destroy the man who had put him behind bars. Murder was merciful compared to what Cady had in mind - and what Cady had in mind was Bowden's innocent and lovely teenaged daughter.

Dated But Great

Wrong narrator for this book
Revisado: 01-18-24
I enjoyed the story very much. Even though it was somewhat dated it’s fun to read the source material for the two movies that have been produced. However, like many others have said, the reader was the wrong reader for this he was far too casual. I had to speed up the narration speed just to move it along. It definitely needed a more intense reading. Too bad. It is a good book though lots of tension as it winds up.

Historia
“Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend, Mack Stafford, a former lawyer in Clanton, who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole money from his clients, divorced his wife, filed for bankruptcy, and left his family in the middle of the night, never to be heard from again—until now. Now Mack is back, and he’s leaning on his old pals, Jake and Harry Rex, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned.

Decent stories, Poor narrators
Revisado: 06-23-22
As for the first story it’s a continuation of where fish files left off but still feels incomplete. It seems like Grisham wants to make a trilogy out of that character Mack, and have a third short story to wrap it all up.
As for Jeff Daniels he is not a good narrator. I had to put the speed at around 1.3 just to get through the story he was awful scratchy and monotone definitely not Michael Beck and he probably should not narrate books.
As for the second story it had its moments I enjoyed all the books and authors that were mentioned but again I don’t care for this narrator Ethan Hawke either. Like Jeff Daniels Hawke is also too flat and monotone in his delivery.
Actors aren’t always good narrators. it’s really too bad they’re pretty good stories hampered by terrible narration in all three cases.
I’m now into the third story and her narration January Lavoy is OK but why have a woman narrating a story about two brothers. Shouldn’t a man be narrating that?
I know John Grisham has no control over the narrators but whoever chose these three narrators for these three stories all three deserved better the stories are good. That person choosing did a very poor job. Zero for three on narrators.
I liked the first story. The second story was all right, and so far the third story is good and funny but all three stories have poor narrators. Again the third story should be narrated by a man not a woman when it’s about two brothers just my opinion.
Also one other small quibble again to the producers of this audiobook for these Novellas as they are called:
Even though they are broken up into sections I don’t like that the readers call them chapters they should say the number above each section it’s broken up to for example one, two, three, four. They say Chapter one Chapter two Chapter three Chapter four in each story. These aren’t chapters to me they’re just sections in each long novella.

Love Elmer Kelton
Revisado: 11-30-21
I’ve only read a quarter of the stories in the collection so far but I always love Elmer Kelton and his short stories are as great as his novels.
I can only hope audible will record and release his other three collections of short stories on audio. The stories are varied in length and subject but the characters he writes about always seem so real.
Look for his other collections ‘Hard ride’ ‘Wild west’ and ‘The cowboy way’. I do hope they get recorded for audio some day. The narrator does a good job as well in all the stories here.
————————————————————
Update 01/26
This is a great collection. I enjoyed every story, however two of them had similar outcomes and the overall story was similar. Biscuit for a bandit and relic had similar ideas themes and even endings. Apache patrol dragged a bit for me too. Overall a great collection by Mr Kelton.

Wrong title for this audio book
Revisado: 10-29-21
This book is great just wanted to make people aware that when you purchase it you will be getting a story called “the good old boys” not “six bits a day.”
For whatever reason the audio tracks and the cover art are wrong at about a minute and five seconds or so on track number one after it does the cast intros it says that this is a Hewey Calloway book but it’s called “the good old boys” I told audible about it but they said they haven’t had any complaints about it so I’m writing these reviews to let people know.

Hewey Calloway is between a rock and a hard place: The open range and simple life of his childhood are disappearing. He can't live a cowboy life whose time has passed and he's not ready yet for the new challenges of the 20th century, like automobiles, telephones, and barbed wire fences. He and his friends, all of them good old boys, must learn that even the best choices involve some kind of sacrifice.

Revisado: 10-29-21
I wanted to bring it to peoples attention that this book is listed as the good old boys. However it’s just over a minute in on the first track after it does the cast introductions it states the name of the book and it says that it is for a book called six bits a day which is the third one in the series. I notified Audible about it but they claim they had no other complaints about it but it’s playing the wrong book for the cover art/title that’s listed so if you buy this book just know you’ll be getting six bits a day not the good old boys. Both are good books but the covers are wrong.

Not unabridged missing several stories
Revisado: 02-25-20
There are a handful of stories from this book not included on this audio production. The carol singers by Josephine bell (which is the story I was looking forward to hearing the most) is nowhere to be found. Even though it’s mentioned in the intro by penzler. Also the Agatha Christie story the Christmas pudding the very first story in the book is also nowhere to be found. As I went through the titles and tracks I found 3-4 other stories like the Santa Claus club is in the book not on here. What a shame. I was very excited for this release.

A fun fast read
Revisado: 08-06-18
This was my first book by this author but it won't be my last. it is a fast fun fairly easy read. There are great characters lots of action and it's definitely written from another era. It can be rough in some of the language and action it's not PC by todays standards but it's a product of its time and worth the time I have half a dozen other books on my to read list from this author. The narrator is great too throughout.
