Historia
In the gonzo spirit of Anthony Bourdain and Hunter S. Thompson, Witold Szabłowski has tracked down—and broken bread with—people whose stories of working in Kremlin kitchens impart a surprising flavor to our understanding of one of the world’s superpowers. Traveling across Stalin’s Georgia, the war fronts of Afghanistan, the nuclear wastelands of Chornobyl, and even to a besieged steelworks plant in Mariupol, he shows that a century after the revolution, Russia still uses food as an instrument of war and feeds its people on propaganda.

Historia
At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated.

Beautiful and uniquely Life defining
Revisado: 12-01-23
Paul’s book is a gift, allowing us to explore end of life conditions that all of us will experience in one way or another, for ourselves and with those we love. I moved this to the top of my booklist at the prompt of an unknown reader who had just finished it; grateful that I did so.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Extraordinary novel!
Revisado: 09-29-23
John Boyne’s work is extraordinary, and this novel is a classic. I greatly enjoyed it all, and could not put it down. Wonderful research, character development, writing skills and story-telling. The audio book readers were also extraordinary. This has been all-time favorite for me. Thank you!

The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. Her mother wants nothing more than for their South Carolina endeavor to fail so they can go back to England. Soon her family is in danger of losing everything.

Historia
The oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir. The composer of On the Town and West Side Story, chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic, television star, humanitarian, friend of the powerful and influential, and the life of every party, Leonard Bernstein was an enormous celebrity during one of the headiest periods of American cultural life, as well as the most protean musician in 20th-century America.

“Genius” not found...
Revisado: 04-14-19
I found this to be a story of over-indulgence, and a portrait of a narcissistic man who lacked the kindness required to be a healthy father or friend. He was surrounded be “enablers”, in a family of enmeshment....
