Good resource for A2 German
Revisado: 04-16-25
The narrator speaks slowly and clearly, making it easy to hear each word. The stories are simple but amusing and include simple past tense.

Patrick Tull- the best!
Revisado: 04-09-25
I’m a big fan of Mortimer’s Rumpole, and as usual, Tull’s narration reveals a deep knowledge of the story and characters. As in his work in the Master and Commander books of O’Brien, he can convey high wit in one moment, then nimbly tunes up the tension in the next.
Enjoy!

Perfection!
Revisado: 04-04-25
Patrick Tull is perfection as a narrator, seemingly able to create hundreds of distinguishable characters with intelligence and verve. In Rumpole his skills are wonderfully displayed. The Rumpole stories are highly witty comedies-of-manners in addition to being well-devised courtroom yarns.
When you’re finished, do yourself a favor and listen to Tull in the Master and Commander series of Patrick O’Brien.

Historia
In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

Revisado: 02-11-25
This is an essential book for understanding recent Irish history, politics and cultural change, written by the masterful Irish journalist and critic, O’Toole. I’m hoping, as has been hinted, that he will run for office. THAT would be a positive change.

Tedious treacle
Revisado: 10-23-24
I’m a fan of Gaskell’s works, with their real-world edges and social conscience in comparison to Austen. However, the constant tears and moaning about guilt and sin in this one was a real slog.
I enjoyed the performance, especially the Welsh.

Historia
Sharply observant and wickedly funny, E.F. Benson's six Mapp and Lucia novels satirize the upper-middle-class social climbers in 1920s and '30s rural England. Games of bridge and cups of tea fuel hilarious gossip and vindictive plots a-plenty. It is a masterfully sustained spotlight on the minutiae of village life - a clever and ultimately heartwarming series that seems tailor-made for audio. This second volume contains the second three books.

Historia
The history of European philosophy is usually constructed from the work of men. In Metaphysical Animals, a pioneering group biography, Clare Mac Cumhaill and Rachael Wiseman offer a compelling alternative. In the mid-twentieth century Elizabeth Anscombe, Mary Midgley, Philippa Foot, and Iris Murdoch were philosophy students at Oxford when most male undergraduates and many tutors were conscripted away to fight in the Second World War. Together, these young women, all friends, developed a philosophy that could respond to the war’s darkest revelations.

Excellent in every way, plus…
Revisado: 03-31-24
A deft weaving of the philosophers’ lives and times and the development of their thinking. A celebration of the fruits of particularity and relationship.
I also greatly enjoyed the intimate portrayals of other important philosophers, particularly insightful (and at times charming) regarding Wittgenstein.

Historia
In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry.

A two-legged stool
Revisado: 02-06-24
Toward the end of the book, main character Cassandra asks herself, “Am I incredibly stupid?” Strangely, she does become stupid as the book progresses (regresses?). She starts missing the obvious and repeats silly statements over and over and over…
The first few chapters are engaging, but the story proves to be thin, poorly constructed and paced, and way too long.
Performance was good considering the material.

Historia
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

Uneven performance
Revisado: 10-13-23
This seemed to be drudgery for Branagh, especially in the first half. He didn’t seem to like the story or characters. It’s not sparkling prose, but he could have done better.
Most of the Americans sounded as though they were in a fifties mobster flick.

Historia
In 1990, a country disappeared. When the Iron Curtain fell, East Germany ceased to be. For over forty years, from the ruin of the Second World War to the cusp of a new millennium, the German Democratic Republic presented a radically different Germany than what had come before and what exists today. Socialist solidarity, secret police, central planning, barbed wire: this was a Germany forged on the fault lines of ideology and geopolitics. Acclaimed historian Katja Hoyer sets aside the usual Cold War caricatures of the GDR to offer a kaleidoscopic new vision of this vanished country.

Astute and balanced
Revisado: 09-27-23
I’m very surprised by the two negative reviews that have been posted here to date.
As someone who has traveled to both sides of the wall (before and after), has German friends and knows more about German and postwar history than most in the US, I find Hoyer’s book to be excellent.
Far from propaganda for any side, it respectfully and objectively gives voice to those who experienced life in the GDR. Listen for yourself.
