Unexpected in the best ways.

This is a book for thinkers and people searching for something other than the standard hero adventure. I love how applicable this theme is in our modern age. Ursula is the wizard here.

An orphan's life is harsh---and often short---in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains---a man who is neither blind nor a priest. A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected "family" of orphans---a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards.

Old world storytelling. True adventure!
Revisado: 05-22-16
The narrator is perfect. The prose is succinct yet expansive. The conjured imagery is beyond modern silver screen technology. Don't miss this.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Revisado: 07-24-15
I love it when I get a book on casual recommendation that blows me away. I love it even more when I have no idea what is coming around the next corner. And this narrator? Surprising at every turn. Read this if you want to make it weird!

Historia
Enter the fantastical world of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy, one of the undisputed fantasy classics of all time. Novelist C.S. Lewis called Peake's books "actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience."

Such magnificent turn of phrase, such a billowing, enormous and unexpected masterpiece. I'm buying the next--the third--at this moment and falling back in. Narrator amazing. In fact, he's the voice of the great castle to me.

Meandering, unconvicted, sophomoric, 3x too long.
Revisado: 08-03-14
What would have made The Windup Girl better?
I'm not sure and editor ever took time to cut this book down to make it the short story it should have been.
What do you think your next listen will be?
More Frank Herbert
What didn’t you like about Jonathan Davis’s performance?
He chooses random times to inflect, slow down his speech patterns, sound off, and create emphasis where it is unnecessary. At one point he actually lapses into an English accent for a villain that displayed that at no point in the book ever before.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Windup Girl?
I was driving across the United States and I skipped almost 30 chapters of this book without missing a beat. I wish I was exaggerating. So maybe 30 chapters?
Any additional comments?
I think the author's intention was to show the interconnectedness of politics, dogma, history, nationalism, entrepreneurship and capitalism. I think he is out of his depth and what he sought to achieve in only one book Frank Herbert achieved in five books of Dune. I very much want to like this book but it lacks originality and is in fact more suited for the teen dystopic book section. Not the fantasy or sci-fi world at all.
