Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Historia
New York, 1888. Gas lamps still flicker in the city streets, but the miracle of electric light is in its infancy. The person who controls the means to turn night into day will make history - and a vast fortune. A young untested lawyer named Paul Cravath, fresh out of Columbia Law School, takes a case that seems impossible to win. Paul's client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the lightbulb and holds the right to power the country?

Novel based on real history
Revisado: 04-23-22
I love history. Especially when it is written in novel form. Of course it is hard to know what is truth and what is made up when a book is a novel and not a biography. But The author helps
With all that at the end by telling us about his research and what parts of the story were enhanced.
If you like historical fiction you will love this. I highly recommend it.

Praised by Alice Walker and many other best-selling writers, The Personal History of Rachel DuPree is an award-winning debut novel with incredible heart about life on the prairie as it's rarely been seen. Reminiscent of The Color Purple as well as the frontier novels of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Willa Cather, it opens a window on the little-known history of African American homesteaders and gives voice to an extraordinary heroine who embodies the spirit that built America.

Homesteading in South Dakota
Revisado: 02-17-22
In the early 1900 many set out to claim a homestead in South Dakota. Including the adult children of former slaves.
The Personal History of Rachel Dupree is a novel but based on this historical period of time . It shows the hardships of anyone who tries to turn the vast prairie land into a place to farm and raise a family. The story does a great job of injecting the extra challenges of race without taking away from the isolation, hardship, and great risk of homesteaders in the Dakotas.

Historia
English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery.

Historia
Everyone has dreams of what they want to accomplish in life. Marty Essen’s childhood dream of becoming a herpetologist gave way to his dream of becoming a popular DJ, which led to his dream of becoming a big-time talent manager, which morphed into the dream of becoming an in-demand author and college speaker. While he achieved most of his dreams at various levels, he also realized that he didn’t necessarily have to reach the top to find success or happiness. Sometimes, “almost” is close enough.

An Adventurous and Talented Life
Revisado: 06-28-21
Marty Essen has had a life so-far that is well worth writing about. From his early days helping bands and artists get gigs to his amazing travels on seven continents with the love of his life, he has not led a boring life.
He takes us through his frustration with his father's over-the-top evangelism and into the laugh-fest with his wife after he and she survived an attack by a huge hippopotamus.
I will be looking up his Irreverent series of fiction stories in the near future. He is a talented salesman.

Historia
In 1866, Matt Draper is full of ambition but without money or family to help him succeed. On the Western frontier of an ever-expanding America, toiling as a riverboat gambler seems like the best option to raise enough capital to realize his dream of opening a small-town bank. Though gambling is lucrative for Matt, it is also an unsavory enterprise fraught with danger.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Stirred an interest
Revisado: 03-31-21
I liked his work before I listened to his story. Now my curiosity is fully sparked. I want to see a few more of the movies he has acted in.
One line that sticks with me more than others is, am I authentic? am I a fake? He write his story as if he never struggles with such doubts, but there it is. And I would think someone who submerges himself in characters has to often struggle to identify and own the parts of himself that are his.
The book is stories and poems that let us get a glimpse into parts of Mathews outer life and inner thoughts. Interesting, never boring.

Historia
Family caregivers are, oftentimes, ruthlessly challenged by uninvolved family members who are quick to condemn, but reticent to offer assistance. Such is the case for Colleen Strand, a widow who recently found her own footing who takes on the task of caring for her father Patrick Quinn, recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her older brother Jonathan criticizes Colleen at every turn and verbally abuses the father when he has the gall to exhibit symptoms of his disease.

Heartfelt and Educational
Revisado: 02-23-21
A wonderfully told tale that educates readers about the joys and burdens of living someone living with dementia symptoms. From denial to costs to grief to laughs, this story covers it. Though the heroine dealt with an agreeable and loving father, she was in a support group with others who were dealing with tougher symptoms and needs.
Audio was read clearly though sometimes in a halted way. It didn’t keep the story from shining through.
