Weak for a Jesse Stone book
Revisado: 02-13-25
I have read every Jesse Stone book at least once. The characters in this book are less developed than previous books and the story is just not as developed as one expects. The plot is a bit weak as well.
Many of the character’s behavior just does not make sense or is not consistent with previous books. A little social justice sprinkled through out the book also seemed a little out of character.

Historia
When a body is discovered at the lake in Paradise, Police Chief Jesse Stone is surprised to find he recognizes the murder victim - the man had been at the same AA meeting as Jesse the evening before. But otherwise, Jesse has no clue as to the man's identity. He isn't a local, nor does he have ID on him, nor does any neighboring state have a reported missing person matching his description. Their single lead is from a taxi company that recalls dropping off the mysterious stranger outside the gate at the mansion of one of the wealthiest families in town....

Mailed it in
Revisado: 01-24-21
As a huge Jesse Stone fan we were looking forward to this new release. We were verry disappointed.
Apparently the author learned a new word. There were F bombs throughout the book. Something not normal with Jesse Stone books. I drop the F bomb myself way too often and don’t mind them in general, but Jesse Stone seemed above the over use.
While Jesse was always admired by women, every women he met in the book threw themselves at him. I felt like I was listening to a trashy romance novel.
And finally it is apparent the author does not like firearms, which is fine. But at least keep the facts correct. Jesse puts his revolver in the glovebox, a Glock 40. Or Jesse heard the crack of the rifle and the window shattered. On all but a few the bullet is going faster than sound. There were a few more but the point is made.
Almost forgot, after almost 20 Jesse Stone novels they mention a murder book. Apparently the author just read a Bosch novel.
I am sad that this was one of the weakest Jesse Stone novels we have read.

Historia
Rook is given the honor to be a visiting professor at his alma mater, and he can't pass up the opportunity to mentor burgeoning writers at his former award-winning college newspaper. Shortly after his arrival on campus, a female reporter for the paper is found dead - naked - in Rook's bed. Dealing with betrayal from any man is not Nikki's style. She and Jameson have had plenty of conflicts during their complicated relationship, but none like this. Is her husband keeping secrets of his own, or can she really trust him?

Very poor continuity
Revisado: 03-05-20
Whoever wrote this book obviously did not read the previous books in the series. Dead characters are back, plot lines have vanished, significant relationships have appeared that one heard nothing of in the previous novels. If this was the first book in a new series I would give it a high rating, but this is a series with well-formed characters and a history that was completely neglected.
From that point, I would suggest the editing was about as bad as it gets with this effort.

Long and preposterous
Revisado: 05-06-19
I read the original Bourne a couple of decades ago and quite liked it. After all the movies and time I thought I would give this a shot since the books are completely different than the movies. It was a mistake, I could not finish it. The narrator is very good but the characters and their actions are ridiculous, even for a spy thriller.
There are too many examples to illustrate where they should have either just shut up or not done what they did. It is a shame, I was looking forward to the book but in this case, other than the last Bourne movie, the movies are better than the book.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Weak character development
Revisado: 11-19-18
This is just a weak book, the narration is poor and the storyline is brutal. The ending is pretty good, but the previous 9 1/2 hours hardly make the ending worth it.
The main character is just brutal. While Bosch is lovably dysfunctional, this character is just a flaming bitch and hard to root for. This is one of the few books that I stopped midway through and only my OCD made me continue to the end...

We were looking forward to this book, but...
Revisado: 06-25-18
The narration is frustrating, the male voice is so much from the throat that it becomes distracting. The female narrator is very good. However, all the voices are too melodramatic.
The storyline is very bad, there is so much political correctness in it that it became a punch line for us while driving. Some of the narratives go into such rambling detail that I ended up fast forwarding 5 minutes and the character was still in the middle of the same detail.
Finally, how many stupid mistakes can one person make until it becomes unbelievable? The protagonist, President Duncan makes one stupid decision after another, though it is couched as "I need to this because of that...". When I read a Bond, Mitch Rapp, etc. I expect over the top antics, I was hoping for a bit more of a well thought out plot line.

An excellent book about friends
Revisado: 06-12-17
Would you listen to Spirit Mission again? Why?
Yes I would read the novel again. It was an excellent book that had some discussions about many of the things we remember. The comrades, the sounds, the smells and the joys of life.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes the plot kept me going. I really wanted to find out how the story ended.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Sam took over control of the Chinook and Weber launched grenades...
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Sam spoke to Guru after landing his last mission.
Any additional comments?
The only part I would have changed was the ending. After the mission the story wound up a little fast. I would have preferred seeing some of the characters that I had become invested in, say Weber, to have a little more rounding out in their "moving on".

Historia
In Legend, acclaimed best-selling author Eric Blehm takes as his canvas the Vietnam War as seen through a single mission that occurred on May 2, 1968. A 12-man Special Forces team had been covertly inserted into a small clearing in the jungles of neutral Cambodia - where US forces were forbidden to operate. Their objective, just miles over the Vietnam border, was to collect evidence that proved the North Vietnamese Army was using the Cambodian sanctuary as a major conduit for supplying troops and materiel to the south via the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

A thrilling story
Revisado: 05-10-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you are interested in Vietnam era books this one is fantastic.
What other book might you compare Legend to and why?
Matterhorn. Both books show the struggles of war and the issues with Vietnam. However, they also show how individuals step up in desperate times and do amazing things.
Have you listened to any of Fred Sanders’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first Fred Sanders book I have listened to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Vietnam was my era war and as many of my age there are a lot of emotions surrounding stories of that era. This book brought back many of the emotions...
