The Constitution is the most significant document in America. But do you fully understand what this valuable document means to you? In How to Read the Constitution - and Why, legal expert and educator Kimberly Wehle spells out in clear, simple, and common-sense terms what is in the Constitution and most importantly, what it means. In compelling terms and including text from the United States Constitution, she describes how the Constitution’s protections are eroding.

Good content but biased
Revisado: 09-15-19
The author is obviously Left leaning and anti-gun. As a reader of a book about the Constitution, I should not have been able to pick up on these biases so it makes me wonder how factual the information. Other clues was how she blamed Republicans and never Democrats and spoke in negative terms of Trump throughout as well as other Republican presidents and politicians.
If you can get past all that, I found the book very informative and easy to follow. The author is obviously very well versed in the Constitution and her experience shows.
I do agree with another reviewer when he talked about the 2nd Amendment. The author makes a point that it is all about comma placement and was vague on what the 2nd Amendment meant and left it to the reader to sort of read between the lines while listening to a sort of very subtle almost undetectable biased view. If that sounded vague, then you will know what that chapter sounded like. My impression is this author is a gun control advocate but tends to hold back on her position.

Historia
In the United States today, one in every 31 adults is under some form of penal control, including one in 11 African American men. How did the "land of the free" become the home of the world's largest prison system? Challenging the belief that America's prison problem originated with the Reagan administration's War on Drugs, Elizabeth Hinton traces the rise of mass incarceration to an ironic source: the social welfare programs of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society at the height of the civil rights era.

Hard to get past the bias
Revisado: 03-20-19
If you can get past the bias, great book of stats and dry history. Most major cities are run by African Americans and nothing has changed. Mass incarceration continues. Maybe this really has something to do with drugs and morality with the percentage of single mothers growing daily and marriage on the decline. Who to blame next?

A bashing of America
Revisado: 04-12-18
Very disappointed. The author is so talented and makes some great points but is overshadowed by his political persuasion and driving need to spotlight every wrong done throughout the history of America.

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Interesting idea but not convincing
Revisado: 02-11-18
I bought this book looking for answers but got none.
Performance was good, it was easy to listen to.
As other reviewers have said the same thesis is repeated over and over and near the ending chapters I just wanted the book to be done. What I heard is that there is a massive conspiracy underway to enslave black men through the war against drugs by convicting them for even the most minor drug offenses that leads to long prison terms and felony conviction. Even when these black men are released they never escape and are sentenced to a lower caste level from which they can never escape. I found the use of the word “caste” interesting as I thought of the caste system in India where Indians are born into a caste and are destined to live within it and its boundaries their entire life.
While I agree with much she has to say regarding the disproportionate number of black men being incarcerated and the fact that a felony conviction relegates a person to severe hardship on release from prison, I am not convinced that black men are targeted solely because they are black. Could it be that the area some live is crime ridden and that is also the focus of attention by police? She does not consider that there could be a much deeper problem than just racism and perhaps the problems also stem from poverty and the way children are raised in the environment they live.
My quest for answers continues.

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Liberal Propoganda
Revisado: 01-24-18
It started out great and was very entertaining but when the story shifted away from WWII and turned into hatred against white, it turned my stomach. The worst part is it was brought on in such a subtle and matter of fact way that people who don't understand would easily be caught up that this is actually history. First it was atrocities against women, then blacks, then humanity. Hitler became a passing thought and the real villan was America. Would have been nice to have said one nice thing about the USA but coming from Berkley, I guess that says it all.
Sorry to be so negative. I get the US isn't perfect but let's remember what WWII was really about and who started it and what we were fighting for. We were fighting for our freedom.

Marxism is a term that many people freely use, but few seem to grasp its implications. Sowell's book is the antidote to this problem. He writes in a fluid and easy-to-follow manner, leading the listener through the Marxian scheme of ideas. Along the way, he shatters some existing interpretations of Marx-interpretations that have developed through repetition rather than through scholarship.

A really hard read
Revisado: 11-15-17
I am not that intelligent but have some. I found this book to be way over the top and I was lost most of the time. There are not too many books on Marxism on Audible so it is slim picking. I would say if you want to get the most out of this book, find a way to get Marxism 101 first as this is most definitely graduate level study.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

In these times, we need books like this to remind
Revisado: 11-15-17
First, let me say the performance was excellent. The narrator really brought the book to life . I never read this book and always wanted to so now with Audible, it made it possible. The book is full of emotion and brings to life the trails of slavery and what people were subjected to during those times. No wonder it had such a huge impact when it was written. Most definitely a must read book.

Revisado: 08-07-17
Would you try another book from Janet M. Tavakoli and/or Diane Piron-Gelman?
No. The description of the book says, "heart-rending memoir". I was expecting personal experiences and instead got a recent history lesson.
Would you ever listen to anything by Janet M. Tavakoli again?
No. I found the depth of material to be superficial.
Would you be willing to try another one of Diane Piron-Gelman’s performances?
Maybe
Any additional comments?

What a life!
Revisado: 08-03-17
Would you listen to Infidel again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to it again. Ms. Ali had a very tumultuous life and it was wonderful listening to her life experience and gaining this perspective of life in a Muslim country as well as her experiences as a refugee and living in Holland.
What did you like best about this story?
The down to earth way in which she told her story.
Which character – as performed by Ayaan Hirsi Ali – was your favorite?
Her, of course.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reaction but certainly impacted me.
Any additional comments?
So reviews took issue with her reading the book herself. I found it to be very genuine and added to the book. I quickly adapted to her reading style and found it to be very enjoyable and inspirational. Good job!
