This was an absolutely delightful addition to my library and the perfect follow up to having marathoned Disney+ Loki series. For any fans of the trickster God and those who loved Gaiman’s “Norse Mythology” this title is a must. Fantastic story and perfect narration. 10/10 from this listener.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, other than a narrator who’s voice I enjoyed, but this book was so much more than a treat for the ears, but a treat for the mind as well, running the gamut of emotions as you follow and fall in love with each of the scrappy individuals who make up the Salvage Crew. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre of Science Fiction.

This was an absolutely incredible book and the narration only adds to its many delights. I can’t wait to listen to it again, and can’t encourage others enough to read/listen to this wonderful, beautiful, sweet, and triumphant story. 10/10

My first mistake was in listening to Neil Gaiman’s “Norse Mythology” first, but even standing alone this book fell short of my expectations for it and other similar ones of its genre. It’s not without interest, but, at least for this humble reader/listener, audiobook is not the best format for consumption. The book, which I’m sorry to say I couldn’t even finish here, feels like it spends far more time on the genealogy of all the figures than the stories themselves to the point where these tangents about lineage make it hard to recall whose story the narrator was talking about in the first place. As the subject is of interest to me, I do plan to read the actual text, but I’m afraid I just can’t recommend this audiobook to anyone unless you plan to take copious notes while listening.

The performance of this book was absolutely incredible and I will certainly look for more titles by this narrator, but perhaps not Mr. Koontz. While I seemed to remember his titles fondly from younger years, and don’t consider myself a prude by any means, the MANY references to characters thinking of raping an attractive (perceived helpless) female antagonist were not necessary in most cases to tell or further the story. And a throwaway line in the book’s last few minutes/pages left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth about this title. Namely that the author implies one of the villains to be transgender (the only such LGBT+ character in the book), or else that this person chose to change their identity as a means of escaping notice and/or capture both of which are incredibly toxic stereotypes to perpetuate about an already marginalized & at risk community. I don’t know enough of autism to comment on Woody’s characterization, but had some concerns there as well. Ultimately, the book- while exploring an interesting sci-fi concept- is very problematic, and I’ll be very cautious if I ever choose another Koontz title again.

I want to stress that this isn’t an inherently bad book. For a far more educated and scientific mind, this would be fascinating. Sadly, I went into it with the hope that the primary focus would be the narrative of a transgender man succeeding in an exciting and challenging field. The focus was so heavy on the science and story so laden with acronyms I didn’t know, I found myself pausing to look up terms nigh constantly making the audiobook impossible to finish. I hope to try again with the print version. The transgender narrative is there, but if you go into this book expecting most, or even half of it to be focused on this topic, however, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

I couldn't begin to say the number of times I smiled, laughed and cried along with this book. The story being told here is full of life and love, lessons without ever being too heavy-handed, humor, and honesty. I'm humbled and so grateful to have found this book, a story of hope in the lives of transgender individuals and their family in the face of what can often feel a very dark and scary time. Will definitely be listening again and recommending and sending it to others. I can think of no higher compliment than to say that I loved this book so much I intend to also buy a physical copy to add to my library as well.

My only regret is that the book isn't longer, although, I can't see how it would be managed without compromising the quality of what is presented here. The narration and cast here do a fantastic job of spinning, a- if brief- hauntingly beautiful and thrilling story. Absolutely worth the listen.

This was an even better read than I’d expected. The narrator does a terrific job of narrating a story that is both touching, and incredibly real. I loved these characters and every minute spent listening to this.

While not an altogether terrible listen (the narrator is decent), I'm glad this story was as brief as it was, or I doubt I would have finished it. Trouble with pacing throughout the story, and an ending that ultimately felt only half-fulfilled and a little rushed to wrap everything up are going to keep me from keeping this title in my library after discovering it through the Escape package. It's not the worst mythological/mermaid romance I've ever read/heard, but it's definitely not one I'd go out of my way to recommend to anyone either.
