Historia
Mickey Chambers is an expert at analyzing modern literature. But when it comes to figuring out her own story, she’s feeling a little lost. At thirty-three, she’s an adjunct instructor with a meager summer class schedule and too many medical bills, courtesy of her chronic illness. Picking up a bartending gig seems perfect. Sure, Mickey’s never done this before, but the gorgeous, grumpy bar owner, Diego Acosta, might be the perfect man to teach the teacher…if he wasn’t so stressed.

Got me giggling and kicking my feet!
Revisado: 06-12-24
This was my first time reading a Charish Reid novel and I am blown away! The pacing was great. The characters were all so lovable. Mickey is just a ray of sunshine and Diego was so smitten and adorable. Also, the romance was top tier! I did enjoy the narration but I took one star away because some parts needed a little bit more emotion? But literally this was SO GOOD!

A fun and sexy read!
Revisado: 04-01-23
I personally loved this book! I was a little apprehensive about the narrator, but I really enjoyed his performance. I absolutely loved that both characters are bisexual. The sexy times were *chef' kiss*. The story maybe could have used a little more conflict. I also wished there was a little more of a deep dive into Xeni's family. But overall, a fun and easy read to get me out of my slump.

Good but not great
Revisado: 10-18-22
I really wanted to love this book. Anything with a black female lead falling in love calls to me. Although it was good, it wasn't great. First, the narrator just wasn't my cup of tea. They were very clear but they also came off very flat and dry. Any dialogue that obviously had more emotion or heartache sounded like everything else in the book. I probably would have enjoyed it more had I read it on my own. Second, the mispronounced Korean was a big thumbs down. There were only a few words that came up. Was Google or YouTube not available for reference? Last, the author had the characters saying things and phrases that I just don't think people say in real life? Who says, "I'm allergic to pet dander" rather than just "I'm allergic to pets/cats/dogs". And you're probably wondering, really? It wouldn't have been a big deal if she said it once. But then it constantly kept coming up! I honestly laughed! Who says pet dander?! Also, when our guy Michael was getting in "the mood", he also said weird phrases that turned me off.
So yeah, good but not great.

Historia
In Clan MacKenzie, we fight for each other. We die for each other. And when I fell for Chevelle, those same rules applied to her. She loves me, but hates the family business. So, I hid the villain in me until today. Today, I need to do what must be done and that requires the help of the same people she would rather us keep our distance from.

Don't Waste Your Time
Revisado: 02-19-22
I was so close to throwing this book away but I had already come so far. Chevelle is quite possibly the worst written female protagonist I've ever come across. She's incredibly immature, won't listen to anyone, and constantly uses her trauma as an excuse to avoid any accountability for her actions. That along with the female narrator made finishing this book miserable. Isaacs displays NO emotion in her narration. JT Farrell was one of the few things good about this book. His accent was perfect and his narration made the Scottish slang easier to understand. The story was also lack luster. Chevelle and Leith have the worst communication skills of all time and there were at least 3-4 chapters that I skipped just because their back and forth could have been resolved if either of them would actually listen to each other. Sure, the romance was good but I couldn't sympathize with Chevelle at all due to her behavior. Overall, this really missed the mark for me. I try to search for strong black female leads in books and this was severely disappointing.
