Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

everyone should know this story
Revisado: 03-15-25
got this book on a whim and it was not a let down. the author doe a great job of telling the story of the wager. the author helped understand the danger, pain, and perils of an early seaman. The accounts of what took place on wager island were told from an unbiased point of view and really helped capture what it would feel like to be stranded from different views. i read a lot of reviews being bad because of the narraration. these reviews were so bad i almost did not get this book but now i see; they were themselves an exaggeration. Does the narrator emphasize ans dramatize the book more than other narrators i have read - yes. is it a bad thing - no. the narrator brings passion to the pages from. page one to page done. i never felt it was ever too much. Many books have theatrical narrations with multiple people this one has a mild version of theatrical by one narrator. Please do not let those other reviews deter you from this book or this narrator.

Historia
Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

a christians view
Revisado: 11-27-24
As a Christian and a lover of science i feel Bill Bryson is able to approach science in a very simple manner while keeping philosophy seperate. For the most part, the author is very unbiased in his approach though he does sneak in some small jabs at religion in general every now and then and i cant hold that against him. It is clear that Bryson is agnostic at best and possible atheist yet despite that i cant help but to see God in this book. Though he writes with confidence about what " science" says he is also very fair in saying that scientists get it wrong A Lot and beliefs and theories change over time. he also is honest in showimg science as a belief system where many scietists disagree and very often. my biggest gripe was in the origin of life section where Bryson breaks down proteins and DNA both needed simutaneeously to create life at this point he painted himself in a corner to creation from intelligent design only to escape with a one sentence quote from new athiest Richard Dawkins, the absolute worst source in philosophy and in my opinion and loser of any eye to eye debate on this matter against john lennox , william craig and others. Science is at its root a way to understand how amazing God is in His creation and overall this book captures that. this book is filled with the following throughout amazing, odds against, unlikely, creation, design, marvelous, we dont know, we dont understand, beyond our understanding. it is believed and many more words that show the limitaion of man in underatsnding this great and marvelous creation we call home both earth and our bodies. , i thought that this book was pretty well done and pretty funny in some parts. at the end of the day Scientists will finally get to the top of the mountain and see theoligians waiting the big bang was the first big step from cosmology and now his Glory is being revealed more and more via the complexity of DNA. Atheists are God's know it all teenagers that will one day see the error of their ways. i would also recommend "there is a God" by former poster child for athiesm antony Flew and "believing is seeing" i cant remeber the authors name - sorry.

Historia
From the author of The Power of One comes a new novel about Africa. The time is 1939. White South Africa is a deeply divided nation with many of the Afrikaner people fanatically opposed to the English. The world is also on the brink of war, and South Africa elects to fight for the Allied cause against Germany. Six-year-old Tom Fitzsaxby finds himself in The Boys Farm, an orphanage in a remote town in the high mountains, where the Afrikaners side fiercely with Hitler's Germany.

similar yet satisfying
Revisado: 11-27-24
This blueprint of this book is very similar to The Power Of One and a combination of other Bryce Courtney books. however, with that said, I would still recommend it as his introduction to new amazing characters maybe just put some space between reading then back to back.

i got half way then gave up
Revisado: 10-21-24
figured i would try something new. i got half way through the book before i gave up on the author. The story itself was interesting enough as the author has a different writing style and the main character was at first distinct and well developed but then all the dots were starting to connect.
its like this author had prewritten list of liberal party checkboxes that absolutley had to be checked as the story progressed. lead female character check, make sure she is a lesbian, check. of course her partner is anti-capitilist black woman -,check. good news is the author does not dwell on these items at first and he then goes on with they story but slowly adds more and more such as a bubbling goof ball white man. - check. white man of course is the son of a rich lawyer who has white privilege - check. introduce intellegent woman scientist who of course is vegan - check. make sure you have a female president - check. though art is rarley mentioned in the book and not very relevant - ensure that one photo described is about how how gender is a social constuct - check. small spolier alert the main character has a belief that this statue is an alien that is here to help and feels the task is to show unity with the rest of the world, to help it. so. what does she do when a white male disagrees with her - check. thata right call the white man a overzealous bigot of hate and war mongering - check and go on the attack on his opinion and character - check. i coukdnt tske it anymore and stopped listening.
ok yes i am a white male (sorry. not sorry) but i actually dont vote as i dont care for all the drama but i do care about cowardly grooming people /kids especially in this manner. the story itself might have turned into something without the inundatuon of the authors polotical ideologies.
These checks are not a coincidence. they are intentional. just like the alien in this book enters peoples minds this author slowly penetrating yours for a political agenda. To understand why and how I would highly recommend reading The Named Communist.
Just an opinion of some good for nothing white man

Historia
Dr. Michael Guillen, a best-selling author, Emmy award-winning journalist and former physics instructor at Harvard, used to be an atheist ― until science changed his mind. Once of the opinion that people of faith are weak, small-minded folks who just don’t understand science, Dr. Guillen ultimately concluded that not only does science itself depend on faith, but faith is actually the mightiest power in the universe.

excellent excellent and excellent
Revisado: 10-19-23
i've never understood why I am expected to not like science because i believe in God? my response to this question has always been God gave us intellegence and logic to be used in an attempt to understand how amazing he is, as a form of worship. however, just with anything God provides man abuses and intellegence and logic are now idols of worship. i wanted to read this book to understand why an accomplished physicist turned towards God because of the deeper science and this book answers that question in quite an amazing way. i typically do not think authors narrarate their books very well but Dr Guiilen is an exception as his narration skills are exceptional. this book is so great that i plan on giving them pit for free on my youtube channel - ActivityMinistry

What is my purpose in life? What is a good life? Why is there so much wrong with our world? What can I do to help make it right? These are some of the big questions that everyone must answer. And any lasting change in our lives will start with a change to one or more of our answers to these questions. Jesus changed the life of every person he met in the Gospels, through powerful experiences and words that led them to unexpected and transforming answers to their big questions. These conversations can still address our questions and doubts today.
