Historia
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia believed that the United States Constitution is the most reliable source for a fair interpretation of the law as it is applied today. He was, in other words, an "originalist". But aren't the laws written over 200 years ago subject to interpretation - or even guesswork? Edward Gero stars as the late Justice Scalia in John Strand's insightful look at Scalia's life and legal philosophy.

Remarkably inaccurate
Revisado: 05-13-17
Imagine a play by Ann Coulter about Barack Obama. Pretty bad, right? This is that bad.
The vast majority of the lines by Scalia are contrary to his well-documented positions and the basic rules for Originalism. Just YouTube one of his lectures! The author creates a strawman that can easily be knocked down by misattributing positions and motivation. Kinda like how Coulter discusses Obama.
The young, liberal law clerk who challenges Scalia at every step is written as the most sympathetic character, in contrast to the Evil Scalia. It's stunningly bad.
But the last 30 minutes is an interview with former clerks, and it dispels and undoes everything the play attempts to do; namely, dishonestly portraying the basic rules for Originalism and the judges who follow it still (it used to be orthodoxy as the way to ensure an enduring Constitution and democracy).

Historia
Gloria Steinem - writer, activist, organizer, and one of the most inspiring leaders in the world - now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of how her early years led her to live an on-the-road kind of life, traveling, listening to people, learning, and creating change. She reveals the story of her own growth in tandem with the growth of an ongoing movement for equality. This is the story at the heart of My Life on the Road.

The book is not about femisnism; it's about people
Revisado: 06-29-16
I'm not what you would call a feminist. But I appreciate good insight. This book often focuses on her realizing her incorrect snap judgments about people and life. And she gained that by traveling in very unappealing circumstances, in low-brow vehicles.

Whether it's family history, religion, aging, or his parents, Michael Ian Black always has something to say in the dry, irreverent voice that has captured a fan base of millions. When a medical diagnosis forces him to realize he's not getting any younger, he reexamines his life as a middle-aged guy - of course, in the deadpan wit and self-deprecating vignettes that have become trademarks of his humor.

Glad he didn't go for the quick joke. Very balanced. Makes you like him as a person and think about humanity and frailty.

Adam rips parenthood a new one, telling it straight about what adults must do if they don't want to have to support their kids forever. Using his own crappy childhood as a cautionary tale, and touting the pitfalls of the kind of helicopter parenting so pervasive today, Daddy, Stop Talking is the only parenting book you should ever read.

Historia
Colin Quinn has noticed a trend during his decades on the road - that Americans' increasing political correctness and sensitivity have forced us to tiptoe around the subjects of race and ethnicity altogether. Colin wants to know: What are we all so afraid of? Every ethnic group has differences, everyone brings something different to the table, and this diversity should be celebrated, not denied. So why has acknowledging these cultural differences become so taboo?

You will never find a book like this. I can't wait to buy the book so I can find and share the clever--and politically oncorrect--observation of Colin growing up in Brooklyn. He focuses on how stereotypes are true, that we should deal with them, and that there are some silver linings to negative stereotypes. I plan on buying several copies for friends.

The definitive account of the O. J. Simpson trial, The Run of His Life is a prodigious feat of reporting that could have been written only by the foremost legal journalist of our time. First published less than a year after the infamous verdict, Jeffrey Toobin's nonfiction masterpiece tells the whole story, from the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman to the ruthless gamesmanship behind the scenes of "the trial of the century".

Let's be honest - nobody has more fun than atheists. Don’t believe it? Well, consider this: For nonbelievers, every day you’re alive is a day to celebrate! And no one celebrates life to the fullest like Penn Jillette - the larger, louder half of legendary magic duo Penn & Teller - whose spectacularly witty and sharply observant essays in Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! will entertain zealots and skeptics alike.

Good stories, not so much on making connections
Revisado: 02-14-16
Fun stories. Better than most books I've purchased on Audible. But when he tries to connect his stories to why atheism rules supreme, then it reminds me of what happens to lawyers when they get out of law school and get in front of a judge for the first time. After they are done making their arguments, you see this look in a judge's eyes before she says, "Counselor, I think you are failing to take into consideration that . . ." And that's what happens when he tries to connect his stories into where religious people screw up. He isn't as bad as most atheist commenters on religion, but he's such an interesting and smart guy that it annoys me a little bit when he makes some of his arguments. All said, he would be fun to go on a road trip.

Historia
From Citizens United to its momentous rulings regarding Obamacare and gay marriage, the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has profoundly affected American life. Yet the court remains a mysterious institution, and the motivations of the nine men and women who serve for life are often obscure. Now, in Uncertain Justice, Laurence Tribe and Joshua Matz show the surprising extent to which the Roberts Court is revising the meaning of our Constitution.

Highly misleading
Revisado: 01-20-16
Have you ever been told something, and later found out that person purposefully withheld a crucial fact that changed everything? Tribe withhold (spins) in almost every case he spends time on. I'm generally politically moderate and an attorney, so I knew Tribe would put a leftward slant on the Court. But this book takes the cake. Passive agressive compliments to Justices he typically disagrees with. Mocking tones when quoting statements he disagrees with. Constantly referring to Originalism but not defining it (!?!?). Referencing broad concepts without spending time on the conterbalancing concept (freedom and order, for example). I named my kid after Alan Dershowitz, but I still can't tolerate such a misleading bend in the name of liberalism. Only redeaming quality is at least you hear about some interesting cases and some dots are connected.
