Beware short story ahead.

I have read all of the Pern series, by Anne McAffery. Without a question, I love the series. Having read the books I thought I would give a listen to the begining of the story again, and purchased the audio book. After listening to it, I was disapointed in how short it was, compared to the original story. It left out some significant events that were in the book. On the upside the narrator had a clear voice and did not detract from the story significantly, the missing sections was detracting enough. If you have read the book I might consider getting it just as a general reminder as to what happend if you want to pick up the series again. If you are a first time Pern reader I would seriously consider skipping. Love Pern, Love McAffery's writing, so I give it 2 stars, One for each.

I have read every one of Anne McAffery's Dragon riders of Pern books, multiple times. I highly reccomend the written books as the audio quality and abridged nature of this re-telling of her books left me sadly disappointed with the story. I have also purchased Dolphins of Pern, First Fall, and The Girl Who Heard Dragons, and Dragon Singer. As those ones are not abridged I can reccomend them, but you will be missing out on the background that is in the first three book. I gave this 2 stars for the story, basic as it is, is still McAffery's work. If you haven't read any of her works on Pern, please don't judge her by this paltry showing of it.

Audio quality lousy

I have read the series and was looking forward to listening to the series from Audible. I listened to the first two books but by the time I got to the white dragon the quality has slipped to the point that I can't bring myself to recommend it. The actual story is a good story so if you can find it elsewhere go for it.

I read each and every book of Pern and was looking for something to fill hours at work. The narrator did an excellent job of translating difficult characters into an audio experience. This reading is as good as the original book, with a few minor points that didn't quite fit with the 'mind voice' I had for the characters. I still think it rates the 5 stars I gave it. Buy the book! Buy the Audio book -- either way it is a good read!
