Historia
With a thriving parahuman accounting practice, a steady relationship, and a circle of trusted friends, Fred's undead life has become more enjoyable than his normal one ever was. Unfortunately it also seems that he's no longer the only vampire to appreciate the up-and-coming city of Winslow, Colorado. A new clan of vampires is moving in, and they aren't well known for tolerating outsiders in their territory.

Amazing!!
Revisado: 04-08-25
Ahhhh I love this series.
It’s so funny and relaxing and relatable? Again I’d recommend this to all of the What We Do in the Shadows fans because it’s just so similar in vibes. You just want to root for these characters!
And I love all the new characters that get added each book? Like why do I like Lilian and Asha?? 😂 idk they’re just so interesting to me. Every character has a unique personality that is just so GOOD. No one is annoying.
Drew Hayes has quickly become one of my favorite authors. His writing style is just so GOOD and makes you connect so easily with the characters.

After discovering just how filled with magic, intrigue, and adventure the parahuman world of being an undead American can be, Fredrick Frankford Fletcher did exactly what was expected - he became a certified parahuman accountant. Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters.

Hilarious and inventive
Revisado: 04-03-25
Like a 4-4.5ish.
I really am enjoying this series a lot!! It's so much fun and so inventive and I love the little nuances of random things - and the Easter Egg to Spells, Swords, and Stealth!! I giggled a LOT at that.
I will definitely keep reading this series and I recommend to anyone who likes paranormal urban fantasy. It kind of reminds me of a tamer What We Do in the Shadows. I LOVE Fred; he's so sweet and also so stinking funny in his bluntness and honesty.

Cute and weird
Revisado: 03-28-25
So this was so stinking cute and weird and abnormal?
It read more like a series of short stories all with Fred and Crystal and their entourage which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. I did really like each individual story and I could definitely see this being great as a series with one consistent plot (which I've heard comes later) so I am super excited to continue. I also liked that this was pretty actiony for an "unadventurous" tale!
Plus the plot twist at the end? COME ON. Loved it. Can't wait to read more of these two.

All newly minted pediatrician Jamie Malek wants is to borrow a roasting pan for Christmas dinner. Outside, a howling blizzard. Inside, a crackling fire. Suddenly, being snowbound with the man she never expected to see again might not be such a bad way to spend a winter’s night.

Cringey
Revisado: 11-15-24
I hated this book so much.
Most of the book was Ali trying to tell the reader why this relationship should work and I still don’t think these two are right for one another. The MMC is an obsessive cringey man who needs to learn no means no.
And fyi - there’s about 5 minutes of smut. That’s it.

Historia
Chaos, the vicious supernatural competition where heroes are born and riches are won. To most, it's just an urban legend whispered in the darkest shadows, but that all changes when my best friend drags me into a savage world where vampires, shifters, and fae compete for glory and fame. As a creature without magic, I’d be a fool to enter Chaos, but the prize—a dagger of untold power—could change my powerless existence. With that dagger, I could wield magic, earn respect, and maybe, just maybe, win the heart of the dragon heir… it’s a risk I have to take.

Incredible YA fantasy

SCREAMING. CRYING.
THAT ENDING.
JULIE HALL HOW DAAAAARE YOU.
You conniving evil genius. Where is the next book? I need it immediately. More than Onyx Storm even. Like, I can't even fathom waiting for this next book.
Okay, calming down. Let me get to a review here before I go scream incoherently into a pillow for hours.
Creatures of Chaos reminds me of a YA version of Fourth Wing and the closest YA book I can think of to compare it to is House of Night. It gives you that same visceral REACTION - where you're like "I don't think this series is the best series ever but I CANNOT stop reading it because I need to know how it ends." And seriously, I devoured this book (on audio) and I just want MORE. Especially more of Talon. If he is not end game, I don't know how I will survive, okay. Please let this be a slow burn for them. PLEASE. I don't hate Becks but Talon makes me feel SO much more and I love that boy to pieces. He's so adorable.
Again, I will reiterate, this isn't like "the best book ever" and honestly many of you will be like "omg, this is too dramatic and YA for me" like it's a bad thing to be. I devoured it though, and I am left starving for more. Just be warned if you don't like YA books where the FMC is pining after a guy, then you should steer clear. Also, if you hate love triangles, you can just leave now. HAHAHA.
It also kind of reminds me of the Selection a little bit. And I did see some of Aspen in Becks - but I will also say that Becks is much better! Just a few tiny aspects that remind me of Aspen. Talon, however, reminds me a lot more of Xaden from FW than Maxon. Maxon is just such a cinnamon roll innocent whereas Talon is this dark mysterious creature that is drawn to Locklyn because she's just ... a girl trying to survive and live and love and gosh, she's so cute too. Whyyy. I can't even begin to understand why I even like her because she's so ??? I bet you guys will hate her but I feel for her. I love her a lot - she's trying her best in this world that will always be against her for not having magic.
This review became a ramble of craziness and I can't even help it because I WANT MORE NOW.

No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won't say who fired the shot that killed their friend, Grant; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them. Kate Marino's senior year internship at the District Attorney's Office isn't exactly glamorous - more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen.

Great mystery!
Revisado: 09-25-24
This book is a cross between A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and One of Us is Lying. The big change from both is that the FMC is actually an intern for the attorney and thus is ACTUALLY ABLE to get a lot of the information dealing with the case - so it makes SO much more sense that AGGGTM. (Looking back, I think I overrated AGGGTM because this was WORLDS better.)
What I really appreciated here was the above: that it makes SENSE that this girl is investigating this case, not only because she has access to evidence but also because she believes she was talking to (and falling for) the victim. I loved the twists throughout this book. I especially loved how all of the characters reacted to everything. And I REALLY loved getting a glimpse of the killer's thoughts without actually knowing who he was. It was super intriguing to get that extra bit of info!
Highly recommend to fans of the above two books and of Elston's Adult book: First Lie Wins. I think this one also gives us a lot of similar vibes and I like how realistic both books are.

An amazing dystopian series
Revisado: 09-06-24
This trilogy was absolutely spectacular and I don't understand why it doesn't have the same hype that other dystopian series get because I absolutely loved every second of this series. All the twists, all the characters, all the author's choices! Ben Oliver did an amazing job and I can't wait for more books from him.
I think one of my favorite aspects of this series is Luka Cain himself (spell check me because I audiobooked this. lol) He is this bright believer in humanity but also has had a rough life, and continues to have rough times during this series. He's so genuine though and I love that about him. I love that he wants to forgive and trust and BELIEVE. And there were so many times that I just teared up at his purity, the purity of human that can only happen in so few individuals. He was the perfect main character for this series.
All in all, I would recommend this to dystopian / sci fi fans, especially for fans of the Uglies trilogy. My ultimate takeaway was that this series was like a messed up, dark version of Wall-E with human main characters. HAHAHA AND I LOVED IT.

Excellent dystopian
Revisado: 09-04-24
Oh, Ben Oliver. You have wrapped me up in a crazy whirlwind dystopian that I never want to leave. I am so saddened that there's only one more book in this trilogy because it is some of the BEST dystopian sci fi I've read in quite a long time, reminiscent of the frantic nature of Uglies by Scott Westerfeld but with a beautiful new voice.
How does a terrifying dystopian where death comes for everyone.... also bring me such laughter and sweet moments? It's because emotions are heightened when you are on the verge of death. Everything feels so much MORE. Also, Apple Moth doesn't hurt (no idea if it's one word or two as I did audio.) That little drone was by far my favorite addition to this volume!
I am SO excited to see where this trilogy leads with the final book. And at the same time, I am so SAD to know it's almost over. I will 1000% be following Ben Oliver's future books because this author can WRITE.

Small Florida coastal towns often find themselves scrambling for the tourism dollars that the Orlando theme parks leave behind. And within the town limits of Boneyard Key, the residents decided long ago to lean into its ghostliness. Nick Royer, owner of the Hallowed Grounds coffee shop, embraces the ghost tourism that keeps the local economy afloat. Cassie Rutherford possibly overreacted to all her friends getting married and having kids by leaving Orlando and buying a flipped historic cottage in Boneyard Key. Though there’s something unusual with her new home.

Too basic
Revisado: 08-27-24
This book was a total and complete miss for me.
So the romance was extremely basic. New girl moves to town and meets the owner of a bakery/coffee shop who has abandonment issues. Neither of their personalities were that great either. The FMC was pretty judgmental and pretty weepy in terms of like "oh no, my old friends don't care about me" when it sounds like she didn't really TRY that hard with them when she lived there. She has her own personal past issues... which aren't really handled in the way I would have liked. The MMC was...honestly I have nothing much to say about him because he was basic. hahaha. A nice guy, typical romantic love interest.
The ghost story was the reason I continued listening to this book and I was satisfied with it, but also, I predicted it. It was TOO obvious and also, too.... BASIC??? Like, this whole book was just NOT SPECIAL.
What I wish we had gotten more of was the mystery / past situation. I REALLY wish we had gotten more focus on the ghosts and the ghost tour and learning the real truth of the town's past. I think those sections were the most interesting to me. This should have been a mystery with a side of romance instead of the reverse.
(I also liked the guy from the history library/museum place WAY more than the MMC and he was in the book for like all of 30 minutes maybe hahahaha.... Maybe he'll get a book later?)

Eileen Merriweather loves to get lost in a good happily-ever-after. The fictional kind, anyway. Because at least imaginary men don’t leave you at the altar. She feels safe in a book. At home. Which might be why she’s so set on going her annual book club retreat this year—she needs good friends, cheap wine, and grand romantic gestures—no matter what.

A nice romance
Revisado: 06-26-24
I’m not sure why other people aren’t liking this? It’s basically Ash Poston’s MO?
We get a hilarious FMC who loves books and is obsessed with this small town books series. She accidentally enters the fictional town from the books. And a grumpy MMC who isn’t sure about this girl coming into town.
We get a little bit of mystery here and it’s much less predictable than Seven Year Slip buuuut it still is fairly predictable once you get to a certain point. I guessed the twist which I did in all of her other adult romances too. It’s definitely a pattern in her books where she’s not exceptionally great at foreshadowing.
Now, what I did like is that this idea was original. It was cute and funny and I loved the aspect of figuring out your life after you break up with a love interest, and relationships in general. As it was about a romance novel series with different relationships, it was kind of a nod to the romances we all read - and the relationships in them… and what happens “after” the HEA.
It’s very cute and funny and honestly imo it was WAY better than Seven Year Slip but not as good as Dead Romantics.
