Historia
During the Great Depression, Jeb Nubey is running from the law when he meets three abandoned children. With nowhere else to go the group passes a stormy night in a comforting church. When they are discovered, a case of mistaken identity ensues. It seems the congregation has been waiting for their new pastor, a widower with three kids. Looks like more trouble for Jeb. Yet the chance for a steady job and three squares a day is too good to turn down.

Touching
Revisado: 11-11-04
This book is so cute. It is well written and narrated and just one of those sweet stories. I look forward to getting in the car everyday and as I approach the end of the book, am sorry that it will end soon.

Historia
When Chaz Perron's wife discovers that he is running a scam (posing as a marine biologist to doctor water samples so that an agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the Everglades), he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner. Unlucky for Chaz, Joey survives clutching a bale of Jamaican pot. Rescued from the Atlantic by a former police officer, Mick Stranahan, she decides not to report him but instead haunt and taunt him, with Mick's help, by playing dead.

While this isn't "great writing" in any critical sense, the story was cute, amusing and fun to listen to.

Pompeii Alive
Revisado: 11-02-04
I found the reading excellent and the story fascinating. I looked forward to every mile to and from work. I was left wondering if the observers in the time really noticed the signs of the impending disaster. It is interesting - and sad - to think they did. After having been amazed by the ruins at Herculaneum, I found it totally believable that the society depicted in the book actually was the way the author told it.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

The narrator is expressive - the story is compelling - and the writing grips you and keeps you there. I am LOVING this book.

Historia
During a trip to Europe, Christopher Newman, a wealthy American businessman, asks the charming Claire de Cintre to be his wife. To his dismay, he receives an icy reception from the heads of her family, who find Newman to be a vulgar example of the American privileged class. Brilliantly combining elements of comedy, tragedy, romance and melodrama, this tale of thwarted desire vividly contrasts nineteenth-century American and European manners.

Reader ? Robot ?
Revisado: 03-23-04
The story is good enough to keep me interested but the reader has no concept of putting himself into the story and expressing the emotion behind the words. Every word is clearly enunciated and carefully spaced so that one has the impression of being read to by an automaton.

Historia
Graham Marshall seems to have it all, until he accidentally - and successfully - commits his first murder. Then, despite his apparently happy life with a pretty wife, two children, a job with excellent prospects, and a good-sized house, he starts to think about audacious - and chilling - ways to improve his life. His wife, after all, is becoming increasingly materialistic. The children are growing up into unappealing little strangers. And there's the mother-in-law... Graham's comprehensive solution, and the plotting it entails, makes for a grippingly plausible story, told with wonderful black...

I Wanted It To Be Over
Revisado: 08-01-03
As another reviewer stated, the main character's behavior was disturbing in a grown man. I couldn't wait to reach the end of the book because I didn't like this person, and as I suspected, everything turned out fine and dandy for him...no consequences. I thought Sarah should have taken a good look at this man and run in the opposite direction.

I Didn't Want it to End
Revisado: 07-10-03
The premise sounded a little odd...ok...a LOT odd, but the reviews of the book had me convinced. I had to listen to it. Besides it was SO long. I love long books. But between the story's writing and the incredible narrator, I felt like I had a companion in my car whom I was sorry to let go. This book was certainly one of the best things I have ever listened to...and I have been listening ONLY to audio books in my car for over 4 years.
