The feelings of living in a mobile home park in the desert and the feelings of longing to be a boy from a girl’s body are entwined beautifully in this compelling, tender, harsh, and hopeful story. Raised piercing questions about what gender is, questions we can all ask ourselves. Did not want to stop listening!!

Anne Lamott never disappoints, with her warm, wise, honest, helpful and ever hopeful faith in God and the love of each of us. Uplifting and a great guide to personal growth.

What I love about Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books are the characters I come to know and care about so quickly so I must know what happens to them, and the plots that are both realistic and unpredictable. Together they grab me and I can’t stop listening til the end. Julia Whelan captures the voices of the different characters so well, with her ironic tone always seems perfect. This is my 3rd TJR/Whelan book and I’m so glad there are more!

This Taiwanese family, transplanted to Alaska by the father, endures hardship and tragedy pretty nonstop, as seen through the innocent and confused child’s eye of the oldest son. It was painful to read, but I was drawn in needing to know how bad it could get, and by the hope that things would get better for these characters I had come to care about. Now that I’m done, I realize what a vivid emotional and physical world the author created, and I’m grateful to have in my bones such clear images of the family and community members and a glimpse of the struggle that this family had on their journey of survival and integration into the U.S.

This memoir only made me admire Michelle Obama more. So good to know what I only had a vague outline of: her upbringing and how she went from south side Chicago to Princeton to Harvard to being a fancy lawyer to choosing more satisfying work for herself, to meeting Barack and her candid account of supporting him in his political ambitions even though it would not have been her first choice for their growing family, to embracing and using her role as FLOTUS to have an effect on issues she cared about. All told beautifully and thoughtfully, with a clear awareness of her family’s important role as the first black family in the White House. Having her read it made me feel like I was really getting to know her.
