Cider is the quintessential American beverage. Drank by early settlers and founding fathers, it was ubiquitous and pervasive, but following Prohibition when orchards were destroyed and neglected, cider all but disappeared. In The Cider Revival, Jason Wilson chronicles what is happening now, an extraordinary rebirth that is less than a decade old.

Good info but insufferable writer
Revisado: 11-13-24
Overall interesting topic and generally well written but the tone of the author makes it difficult to get through. He comes across as a know it all and is just unlikable as a participant in his own narrative. Also, I’m not really sure how Donald Trump fits into a narrative on apple cider however, the author at numerous points mentions Trump. all that being said, the book does provide some useful information, if only the author would tone it down on his personal contribution to the story.

Once the drink of sailors and swashbuckling pirates, rum is the most versatile - and the most varied - spirit in the world. It is consumed neat as a sipping drink, on the rocks, and in a dizzying variety of cocktails like the mai tai, mojito, and piña colada. In Rum Curious, author Fred Minnick first takes the listener on a whirlwind tour of the world of rum, describing its many styles, explaining the great variety of fermenting, distilling, and maturing processes, and highlighting distillers and distilleries.

Great Start; Weak Middle and End
Revisado: 09-09-23
Overall I found this to be a useful book, so it deserves at least 4 stars for the beginning. It gives a very good quick history of rims and a very comprehensive overview of the rum industry including processing, countries, and styles. Where it falls short is the rating section, I think it is useful but does not lend itself well to an audiobook style; this may be one of the few times where a physical book may be a better format. All in all it is informative, but you may just want to skip the last half of the book.

Revisado: 03-07-15
This book is highly reflective of the beer Lagunitas makes. It's not a conformist and not based on any style. It's a bit rambling but overall enjoyable. Interesting addition to the craft beer writing scene.

This is a great, semi-trashy fiction book that is a very satisfying listen. Some of it is over the top, but it makes for a good story. Its not great literature, but it is definitely an enjoyable book.

How do you review a classic?
Revisado: 02-28-13
The Hobbit is a fantastic journey and undoubtedly a classic. The story is wonderfully written and the narration is fantastic. The songs are very well sung and there is enough variation in tone and accent to keep the listener entranced. This is truly a masterpiece and I can give it no end of praise.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History houses, amid its illustrious artifacts, two bottles of wine: a 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. These are the wines that won at the now-famous Paris Tasting in 1976, where a panel of top French wine experts compared some of France's most famous wines with a new generation of California wines. Little did they know the wine industry would be completely transformed as a result....

First 1/2 Fantastic but Second 1/2 Drags
Revisado: 02-28-13
I am a huge fan of the movie Bottle Shock, so I had high expectations for this book. The first half of the book was an excellent set of vignettes and histories that describe the events and people which culminated in the Judgement of Paris. The story of the judgement was also well told and highly interesting. Unfortunately, after this point the book begins to loose its way. It becomes less focused and more of a general discourse on the world of wine. While interesting, the story became a little to loose to keep me interested. So I would say definitely give the book a chance, but don't feel bad if your not riveted by the second half.

Fun and Interesting Adventure
Revisado: 02-28-13
Whatever You Do, Don't Run is a great book if your looking for a little bit of humor and adventure. While Peter Allison is no Bill Bryson, his stories are still well written and pretty humerus. This book shows a very interesting perspective on Africa and paints a wonderful picture of a wild life preserve. The narrator was not my favorite but true to the Authors country of origin and his performance was smooth. Very good book overall, so definitely give it a shot!

Great Primer on Wine
Revisado: 06-21-12
This book provides the perfect amount of information that anyone would need to start appreciating wine. The book is well organized and allows the gradual building of a wine oriented vocabulary. Although the amount of time given to tasting wine is limited, there is a wonderful explanation of various popular grape varieties. This section may go quickly for some, but it is a good way to get acquainted with some basic facts about grapes. I believe that the section devoted to wine regions greatly added to the quality of this book. It provides a country by country comparison of wine and the quality of various grapes. The author seems to enjoy the subject but does not take wine too seriously. This seems like an excellent first book on wine.

Interesting Book but Overall Unsatisfying
Revisado: 06-21-12
This book presents a lot of great information, but overall lacks the cohesion to make it a great read. Although the author does an excellent job grabbing the readers attention in the beginning of the book, she slowly departs from the main topic and leaves the reader wondering where she is going. Everything she speaks about is loosely relevant to breasts but in certain parts, she focuses far too much on the sub-topics and only touches on how they relate to breasts. While this provides the reader with a great deal of information on topics such as fire retardant materials and plastics, it takes time and attention away from the main topic.
Kate Reading is an interesting choice for narrator. While she is one of my favorite female readers, having her read this book is like talking about breasts with a favorite aunt, slightly awkward.
I believe that the information on breast cancer alone makes this book worth reading. The books agenda in promoting awareness of breast cancer is admirable and a great plus. Unfortunately the chaotic and loosely organized structure of the book bring it down from a great book to simply mediocre.
