Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Not For Me
Revisado: 06-20-17
I listened through Chapter 45 of 90, and not only was I not engaged in the story, but I found that I really didn't care about the characters. No point in continuing. I returned the audiobook.

Worth the Credit!
Revisado: 10-25-16
This book by Sherman Alexis is poignant and heart wrenching. Some parts of the story are difficult to listen to, but the author does a masterful job of depicting the protagonist's story, and the ending is highly satisfactory.

Historia
The New York Times best-selling author of The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The War of the Roses, historian Alison Weir crafts fascinating portraits of England’s infamous House of Tudor line. Here Weir focuses on Elizabeth I, also known as the Virgin Queen, who ascended to the throne at age 25 and never married, yet ruled for 44 years and steered England into its Golden Age.

Excellent biography
Revisado: 03-08-16
I rarely read non-fiction, but I decided to try this book because of the reviews I read. It was an excellent portrait of a fascinating sovereign, and the narration brought to life the people and events of the time. Well worth the credit!

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Carey and six-year-old Jenessa have been living in the woods with their mother for as long as they can remember; the sheltering trees and a broken-down camper are all they know. But what they’ve never been told is that Carey vanished from the real world ten years ago, when their mother took her, causing an uproar in the media - and in her father’s life.

Deeply moving story
Revisado: 12-18-15
Although the subject matter was sometimes difficult to listen to, the author presented a deeply moving story about a young teenager and her younger sister who were kidnapped by their drug-addicted mother and secreted for years in an old camper in a remote wooded area. Their lives were harsh and often cruel; however the characters are not painted in black and white; even the mother, who disappeared, leaving the girls to fend for themselves, has some redeeming qualities. A former concert violinist, she taught her older daughter to play violin and provided a manner of home schooling that placed the daughter two years above her age level academically after the girls are eventually found and returned to the father's household.
In my opinion, the book is not suitable for pre-teen children because of references to violence and sexual themes, but it was a well-written, sensitive treatment of a very difficult subject.

Historia
No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

Another Great Read
Revisado: 05-24-15
This novel continues the Chief Inspector Gamache series with a story that takes place outside the village of Three Pines. As always, there is a murder to solve, but the setting inside a remote monastery and the background story about Gregorian Chant provide a different slant than previous books in the series.
Another element that I particularly enjoyed was the interplay of emotions among Gamache, Beauvoir, and Superintendent Francoeur. I had inadvertently read "How the Light Gets In", the following book in the series, before this one, so I knew something of the outcome, but that did not spoil anything for me.
If you are a Louise Penny fan, "The Beautiful Mystery" will not disappoint!

Historia
Click your heels three times and say, "There's no place like Bloomies!" Katie Chandler's life is pure magic - literally. As an executive assistant at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., she's seen more than her share of fantastical occurrences. A mere Manhattan mortal, Katie is no wizard, but she's a wiz at exposing "hokum" pocus, cloaked lies, and deceptive enchantments. And she's fallen under the all-too-human spell of attraction to Owen, a hunky wizard and coworker. Owen, however, is preoccupied. Someone has broken into his office and disrupted top-secret files, and it reeks of an inside job.

Fanciful Fun
Revisado: 03-03-15
I enjoyed this second book of the Enchanted Inc. series. Like the first book in the series, this one is light reading with touches of intrigue, romance, and magic. The narrator does a good job of bringing the characters to life and differentiating among their voices. All in all, a fun read!

Amy Tan Does It Again
Revisado: 01-28-15
I have read several books by Amy Tan and have enjoyed them all. Her writing brings to life the characters she writes about, as well as the settings where the events take place. Some readers may be put off by the descriptions of life in the courtesan houses, but their existence is historically documented, and the experiences of the women and girls who worked in the houses were not imaginary.
The narration was well done and held my interest throughout the story. If you are a fan of Amy Tan, don't skip this because of some negative reviews. It is well worth reading.
