At first, I tried getting into the series by jumping in with a later book, but found I couldn't and returned it. Later, I had a chance to get the first in the series, and was able to get further into the book, and even begin to enjoy it a bit. I'll probably be able to finish it, but after looking into the descriptions of the rest of the series, and the sheer length of those, I don't think I'd find myself able to continue to slog through multiple volumes. However, it might be just the kind of work some people like, it's pretty decent writing, and the narration is pretty good too. I've just not got the heart for the rollercoaster ride. For context, I did like the "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" series, but it's not my usual genre, and I was just hoping to find something with enough compellling characters to keep going in the series.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I wanted to like the book, but it just seemed too involved. I've not finished it yet, still maybe a couple of hours to go, and I'm just going thru the motions.

Did Christopher Cazenove do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Narrator was fine.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I liked the premise, but it couldn't sustain my interest.

Any additional comments?

Besides my basic concerns with the story, the purchase history on this one was confused. I thought I had bought it as one of the buy 3 with 2 credits sales, and that usually makes me more tolerant of a book, but my purchase history showed I had purchased three books for 1 credit each. Not sure if that was a misfunction on the sale cart since it was a couple of weeks before I tried to listen to any of the books, but only was one seemed worth a credit, the other two weren't really worth that.

I think I like it...for the most part

Would you try another book from Laurie R. King and/or Jefferson Mays?

I've bought other of Laurie King's books, and as a rule, liked them. I will probably do so again, but I'm only about half through the book at this time, and I am reserving judgment. I'm in general a big fan of mysteries, some of them the "thriller" type, but for the most part just good old fashioned detective fiction.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I'm not sure--there's definitely an overall "creepy" tone that I normally don't enjoy as much. I was already tempted to abandon the book, but I've managed to convince myself to stick with it a bit longer. It's possible it will take a turn for the better, but so far, it's been a bit daunting and maybe it's just that it's a bit outside my usual taste.

What does Jefferson Mays bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoy the narration, but I'm pretty tolerate of most narrators.

Hard for me to rate an audio book...

Would you consider the audio edition of The Language of Bees to be better than the print version?

This is pretty difficult for me, as I admit I prefer to read on my own rather than listening to someone else read a book. However, I have a long commute, and I listen to audio books as I drive to work each day. I've become accustomed to it, and overall I enjoy the Mary Russell series. There are certain books that I have elected NOT to download, following a bad experience with genre as audio book ("romantic" novels in particular, I found don't appeal to me in this format. When reading these, I tend to "skip" or skim past bits and that can't be done in audio books, at least not easily).

Unfortunately, this one book in the series (so far) has something in common with those books that I don't like to listen to. It contains content that I find even less appealing when read aloud--odd little bits that I might overlook if I were reading, but which you are forced to attend to as an audio book. In this case, the little "quotes" at the beginning of the chapter feel intrusive and uninteresting, and I found it grating after the first few chapters. The other books have similar quotations, but these seem more off putting (some sort of pseudo-religious text, possibly a real one, I can't tell). I can't blame the narrator, it was just a literary device that didn't work for me in this one.

Pretty good

I liked the book, and I appreciate having the authors as narrators. However, one reviewer gave this a 1 star rating because the "PDF" awas not included. However, if you look at the description, there IS an "accompanying" file that you can download. I think it would be clearer if the PDF link appeared in the "Library" section as well, but you have to go back to the book description to download the files.
