Confirmation can be better than new information
Revisado: 08-20-24
Peter puts together so well what people caring about quality of life in conjunction with longevity know or believe to know. Still there were bits of new connections which I was not aware off.

Historia
Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

I liked the structure and sequence. One of the better titles I have listened to. 5 stars every way.

Historia
When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets.

Liked the characters. And the Eros. There is always lust which is met by inconvenient circumstances.

Historia

Beware of not just the language
Revisado: 03-05-23
If you look at the cover it is crystal clear that this text is in German. But it is in 20th century German with a number of English expressions “verdeutschst “as a lot of the good history it delivers stems from Englands industrial coming to be. So being a German native speaker living in the US helped.
Further beware that this is the abridged version which I already found to be long and very repetitive. Especially since this is the first volume (Band 1) of 3. So this does not get into the theory yet in depth that capital will accumulate until it is concentrated in the hands of very few and replace the power of the state. So more patience is required.
As mentioned it does give a good background about the origins of labor laws in the truest sense. The original ones were about peasants’ obligations to work. It further dives into the first insights into the efficiencies of an industrial process with capital investment being best returned by maximizing utilization. Again coming from manufacturing shorter would be better.
The reading itself is superb. Gert Heidenreich is just a gem.

Gives you Perspective
Revisado: 01-13-23
Ray Dalio gives you a good perspective about the ebbs and flows of wealth and power that come and go like the cycle of life. As this patterns repeat over history there is however a change as the world becomes smaller and more connected. The book recognizes that. In the conclusions I would’ve liked to see this aspect better expanded forward as it affects the cycles.
Ray Dalio tends to repeat the points he emphasizes. This makes the book a bit longer than it needs to be.
Still, a must read if you want to understand where one is in her/his cycle in a particular region.

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Essentially the Correct Aproach
Revisado: 07-24-22
But I do not agree with all the character assessments. As a single sided argument counters another single sided argument. But again, in essence, correct. True side was Barack Obama, people need equality which means that some still have to pull their pants up and be grownups. Because equity is not the solution
