Historia
Cece is in love. She has arrived early at her in-laws’ beautiful lake house in Salish, Montana, to finish planning her wedding to Charlie, a medical student with a brilliant future. Charlie asks Garrett, his best friend from college, to officiate, though Cece can’t imagine anyone less appropriate for the task; Garrett doesn’t believe in love, much less marriage. But as she spends time with Garrett, and his gruff mask slips, her long-held expectations for her life with Charlie begin to crumble, her feelings for Garrett—haunted by a tragic event from his past—become impossible to bury.

This story carries the listener along through decades of family life in northwestern Montana. The characters are multi dimensional with faults and attributes. There is tragedy and serendipity. An enjoyable saga with true to life Montana trappings.

A surfers reflection on the craft
Revisado: 03-04-25
This book made me laugh, sometimes without trying, with all the descriptions of surf board shapes and lengths, and fins, and colors and coatings, and curves and shapes. I guess like anything, wherever you go, there you are. If you’re in the present moment it really doesn’t matter if you’re surfing or making jello. Interesting about the quirky endless wave on the canal. I live in Bend and walk the canal trails. See you around.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Deep connections to characters over time
Revisado: 03-04-25
The author takes time to pull you into the lives of the characters in small ways over a period of years. The culture and poverty of Appalachia is carefully represented. An engaging story that leaves you wanting to know more about these people.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

Long and circular
Revisado: 03-03-25
I like to read a wide variety of books and usually enjoy learning new things. This book however, was a slog, chapter after chapter of musing about the authors’ deep and meaningless wondering.
The book was a ramble of narcissistic reflection. She ruminates on her perpetual consternation with people of similar names or physical appearances; doppelgangers.
“It’s about me, it’s all about me. People get her confused with me. People get me confused with her. People confuse my philosophies with her philosophies. I want to be famous but I don’t want to a brand. I’m a brand without having a logo.”
This book is miserable in every way. It finds tidbits of pseudo relevance in literature and time periods nationally and internationally and strives to be poignant. It is banal. We could have phoned this in.
She takes a look back into all things COVID and identifies those who said it was a conspiracy. She reports on who thinks vaccines are a scam. She gives her thoughts and experiences about the history and diagnosis of autism.
After about 11 hours of listening, she mentions that there are steps by which societies flip to fascism.
The ultimate excersize in circular navel gazing. Skip it.

This story centers around a female doctor who becomes involved in solving a murder involving one of her patients. It’s a pleasant and interesting tale. Not overly thrilling, gory, or suspenseful. Intriguing throughout.

Historia
Herman Melville is one of the greatest figures in literary history. His classic Moby Dick is generally considered the finest novel ever written by an American. Yet in Melville’s day, Typee was a far more popular book. Largely autobiographical, this classic adventure story is set in the South Seas, where a runaway sailor is captured by the Typees. Described as “a fierce and unrelenting tribe of savages," the islanders have no intention of letting their captive go.

Travel Adventure
Revisado: 01-09-25
A south seas tale of two young men who go AWOL from a merchant ship on the island of Typee. The story is full of rich description and adventure. The reader is left to wonder about many unmentioned details that keep the story solidly in the G-rated range. Melville hints at romance and cannibalism but never graphically describes them in detail. Lighthearted and enjoyable.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

With the same emotional generosity and effortlessly compelling storytelling that made All Over But the Shoutin’ a beloved bestseller, Rick Bragg continues his personal history of the Deep South. This time he’s writing about his grandfather Charlie Bundrum, a man who died before Bragg was born but left an indelible imprint on the people who loved him. Drawing on their memories, Bragg reconstructs the life of an unlettered roofer who kept food on his family’s table through the worst of the Great Depression
