Wow. I just finished this book, and I can't decide if I should immediately re-read it or move on to the other books that take place in this universe. SO GOOD.

I've already reviewed the other books in the Paradox P.I. series, and they're all great, but I think this one might be my favorite. Probably the most complex story in the series, but not in a way that is difficult to follow. It also answers questions that were set up in the other books in a very satisfying way.

Note: I didn't realize that there were other books in this same universe until I'd already begun the Paradox P.I. series, so there may have been a more appropriate order that I should have read all of the books in, but the author does a great job of letting the reader jump in at any point they choose. That being said, I'll do my best to recommend an order once I've read the other series: "In Times Like These."

At any rate, whether you want to read all of Nathan Van Coops books that take place in this universe, or you're just interested in the Paradox P.I. books, do yourself a favor and pick up this series.

The first book in this series was recommended to me by someone who knows that I love time-travel stories. I went ahead and bought books 1-3, since it cost the same (one credit), and I'm so glad I did!

The first book does a great job bringing you into the world of the characters. The story starts out simple, and then gets more complicated and compelling as the plot thickens. That being said, I never found it difficult to follow. The author does a great job of giving just the right amount of information to keep the reader/listener engaged without crossing the line into overwhelming exposition.

I truly enjoyed book one, and then book two started. A completely different (future) setting, which I've seen other authors do poorly… Not so in this case! I actually think I enjoyed book two more than book one, which I was not expecting. Once again, a well-told, compelling story that I thoroughly enjoyed. It continued to build the world that just brought me in more and more. By the time book three started, I was hooked.

Book three was a classic whodunnit with a time-travel twist, and I. was. here. for. it. It had just the right amount of tease for things to come without giving away too much. I must say: Nathan Van Coops is an amazing storyteller.

I see that there is a book four, and I'm ready to devour it right away!

I HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mysteries and/or time-travel stories. It's truly unique and 100% worth an Audible credit. Don't hesitate to add this to your collection!

I found the cases in this book to be more compelling than the ones in Volume 1, and I did not notice any of the audio issues that I observed in the first volume. Overall, I felt the storytelling was superior, which I think helped the narrator perform better as well.

Interesting content with some odd audio issues

The book seems well-researched, and the cases are interesting, but perhaps not as compelling as I had hoped. I think I was looking for more tension in the storytelling. The narrator did a fine job, but he also didn't seem to have the gravitas that I think may have helped drive these stories.

I also noticed some strange audio issues, particularly in Chapter 7 (The Monster of Florence). After several of the narrator's statements, I was able to hear a sort of digital echo of those statements about a second later. I have no idea what would cause something like that, but it was distracting enough to take me out of the story for a good portion of that chapter.

Note: In the interest of full disclosure, and in case it impacts anyone's opinion of my review, I will share that I got this book for free. There were no strings attached; no one requested that I review this title, and I have no personal relationship with anyone affiliated with this audiobook. Now that we have that out of the way…

D. L. Fletcher was an unknown author to me before I downloaded this book. I read the summary and was intrigued, and the few reviews this book had on GoodReads were positive, but you never really know what to expect when you start reading someone new. So, I'm pleased to say I really enjoyed A Creation of Tomorrow.

I'll start by discussing the narration. At first, I actually thought Heidi Bindhammer sounded a little like a virtual assistant (e.g. Siri or Alexa), so I was concerned that her almost-too-perfect reading style might take me out of the story. Thankfully, I was wrong. Bindhammer did a masterful job of portraying the different characters with their own personalities and even evolving her portrayal of one pivotal character just enough to indicate that character's age as it changed over the course of the book. Truly impressive.

Now onto the story, itself… As I write this review, Audible has this title filed under "Crime Thrillers" & "Suspense." While those are not inaccurate genres, they hardly offer a satisfying description of all that this book encompasses. At its core, this is a love story. Not a romance (although there are sections that arguably include those elements as well)… but I won't expand any further, in order to avoid spoilers.

I've read plenty of thriller/suspense/crime stories over the years, and no matter how well-written or genuinely surprising those stories can be, they almost all tend to fit into a pattern or formula that an experienced reader can identify and anticipate. Essentially, one can expect certain types of twists and/or the inevitable "subversion of expectations" with these stories. Interestingly, A Creation of Tomorrow managed to subvert my expectations by not trying to subvert my expectations (if that makes sense)… and I found that simplicity unexpectedly refreshing.

If I could request one thing of the author, it would be to let me know what happens to one of the characters who hasn't been held fully accountable at the end of the final chapter. That being said, I have peeked at the author's website, and I see that "A Creation of Yesterday" is "coming soon." I can only hope/assume I'll get what I'm asking for when that title is released, so you can be sure I'll be picking that up when it's available!

In the meantime, I'll be checking out this author's other book: The Dying Butterfly.
