Historia
When the United States entered World War II, it had to face its own contradictions at home. Opportunities opened up for Black people and women in support of the war effort. But ideas about race and gender didn't change as swiftly. Listen to the story of the first all-Black battalion in the Women's Army Corps—the Six Triple Eight—and its leader, Major Charity Adams. These women bravely confronted the racism and sexism they experienced. And they did it while creating a system to make sure millions of letters and packages got to soldiers fighting in Europe.

This story is encouraging, and a must read to help understand the barriers that Black women face just to show up in a space and have to work harder than everyone else with zero recognition. sigh

Domestic Violence Looks Vastly Different
Revisado: 01-04-25
I really enjoyed the story. I hate the youthfulness of Lily at times as it was hard to see her maturity compared to her younger self. I really enjoyed the nuance of exploring the complications of real relationships.

Historia
Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy.

Historia
When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was a drummer in a local a rock band. Though he had never been religious in the slightest, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burned to the ground after a 51-day standoff with government authorities. In this compelling account - now with an updated epilogue that revisits remaining survivors - Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired.

Hearing what these people went through was devastating. I don't agree with what was wrong. The government should've handled it appropriately. This was devastating to read. God bless those people and the horrific choices that we made.

Blackness is a kaleidoscope
Revisado: 01-17-21
Morgan Jerkins' voice tells a beautiful story...her beautiful story. Her words helped me define so much of my life and my experiences. Every word resonated in some way. The open letters that she writes, the hygienic discussion, the intersectionalities of being Black, being a Womxn in this America and the pain were all too real. Thank you, Morgan! This book was everything that I needed! 🙌🏽
