Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.

There is a reason you have not heard of most of these people…
Revisado: 11-16-23
The reason most of these stories are unknown is because they don’t have anything to say. Maybe if you live in New York and care about the minutiae of its history, you will find this of interest. I did not. And the reader did nothing to hold my attention.

Historia
The biggest redwood trees are over 1,000 years old, rising more than 35 stories in what's left of the once-vast, ancient redwood forest. Believed to be impossible to ascend, these majestic giants have remained unexplored until recently, when a tiny group of daring botanists and amateur naturalists discovered a lost, dangerous, and hauntingly beautiful world high above California.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Fascinating nuggets but deadly detail
Revisado: 07-11-20
Written well before Covid 19, the similarities between the Spanish flu and covid 19 pandemic are fascinating. It appears we have not learned much. I came away with lots of flu nuggets to overwhelm my friends, but the dense amount of detail will be deadly for most readers.

Historia
As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were soon caught, including the notorious SS leader Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among them were Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler’s brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann.

Overwhelming detail
Revisado: 08-03-19
Unless you want an incredible amount of detail about hunting down a few SS officers, I would not recommend this book. It is only made palatable by Bill O'Reilly's enthusiastic reading.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Bette really liked herself...
Revisado: 01-14-19
I can save you hours. Bette Davis really liked herself. The book spends a lot of time on her early theater days. It ends with more space covering her awards than any other part of her life. I suppose autobiographies tend to be one sided, and this one is.

Historia
Almost 2.5 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001. C.J. Chivers has reported from both fronts from the beginning, walking side by side with combatants for more than a dozen years. He describes the experience of war today as it is endured by those most at risk - the camaraderie and profound sense of purpose, alongside courage, frustration, and moral confusion mixed with technical precision. In these remote places where the reason for their presence is sometimes not clear, these young men kill or are killed, facing palpable and often constant threat of ambush or hidden bombs....
