I wanted to like this book. I wanted to get information and insight into how we form habits and how to go about changing our habits. There are a lot of interesting stories about habits and some information about how habits form. If you listen to the Appendices you get a super brief intro to changing habits which is why I read the book in the first place. I felt like it was a waste of time. However it is indeed what it’s advertised to be. It’s a book about the power of habit. Just don’t expect to read it and get any insights into changing going your behavior. Narration is good.

Incredibly engaging. It was so exciting in places I found myself yelling at the recording urging the Protagonists onward. Well written story that you’ve never heard before. It starts out a interesting story, turns into an exciting adventure and takes you into an incredible, mindblowing sci-fi world. Narration is well done. Each character is distinct in voice as well as well-written and fully developed. I highly recommend this book. It’s more that a read —it’s an adventure!!!

Riveting Inside Look at Congress

This book really puts you inside Congress and how things really get done and why. It covers from Trump’s election through the first two years. It’s not about Trump or the election but the Representatives and Senators and what they do, how they do it and why. If you want to truly understand what gridlock means this provides a painstaking a clear picture. It’s based on inside information, records, conversations, observation, etc written by two people who have covered this beat for years. It’s factual not opinion. I love that they alternate reading so you get a male voice than a female. It’s nice. I probably would have never waded through this material just reading but with audible I listened to it and it became almost like a mystery novel even though you know how it turned out... how it go to that end point is fascinating. Some might find it dry I found it intriguing and I was disappointed when it ended that it was over I wanted to hear more. I recommend it if you interested in learning more about the inner workings of Congress.

If you like mysteries, I believe you’d enjoy this book. Although it’s entitled “The Verdict” most of the book tracks the investigation of a murder rather than being a long courtroom drama. It held my interest and it wasn’t something I figured out in the first two chapters. I thought the narrator was great.

The despicable characters Mr Croup and Mr Vandermar actually made it difficult for me to listen to the book. I had to skip though some of their parts because they were so dark and evil. To the authors credit he wrote them as so repulsive the reader has to come to terms with these two. However there are other characters Lady Door, Hunter, Marquis de Carabas, and Richard Mayhew who are uplifting. The story takes place in the imaginary parallel world of London Underground. Richard does a favor for Lady Door and is drawn into this works and the book is more or less about he’s experiences and efforts to escape. I wanted to stop several times because it was so icky in places but the writing is so good it draws you in and you have to know how it turns out. If you hang in you are rewarded. It’s a great story with a satisfactory twist ending. I think this was Gaiman’s first book and it was even a limited series on British television at one point, where Benedict Cumberbatch played the Angel. You can see graphic novel in you’re mind as the author paints the detailed pictures of a repulsive place filled with disgusting people where the “good guys” are just trying to survive another day. Different from anything you’ve ever read I’m sure. I recommend it because the writing was excellent but you’re going to have to stick with it to the end to get any satisfaction.

This was my first Dean Koontz novel. I liked it. It’s a complex story that engages the listener. Of course you gave that sharp turn that only Koontz can take and you must suspend disbelief and just go with it. The narrator is excellent. I will keep an eye out for books he’s narrated. He did a great job differentiating characters with believable age appropriate voices. Although I did skip ahead a few times wishing them to just “get on with it” Overall it was entertaining.

This is a delightful read. Noah’s book is entertaining, educational, and poignant at times. You are guaranteed to enjoy this read. It’s funny and serious at the same time. It will make you think. Themes from Noah’s book will resonate with you long after you complete the book. The fact that he narrates his own book, his own personal story makes it even stronger. This is one book that is decidedly improved by hearing it read. For example, he uses words from various tribal languages and you hear them pronounced correctly, you hear the clicks rather than just skipping over foreign words as you read. Hearing him read aloud his very personal story enriches the experience. It’s like he sits you down in each chapter to tell you a little story that teaches you something worth knowing, something you did not know before and something you will not soon forget. Do not pass on this book. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Interesting plot but you have to hang in there through many, many chapters before the main character starts to catch onto what the reader has suspected for long time. It has a good twist ending.

The basic plot centers around the main character Christine who has been injured resulting in a condition whereby she forgets everything she knows of her life each time she falls asleep at night. It’s slow going because she can’t put together much information and build on it. Watson, the author, does create unique ways for his character to solve a mystery although she has no long term memory. However, words like “suspense” and “thriller” used to describe this book seem to me to be overstated. It’s a mystery with a good twist ending. It unfolds agonizingly slowly. I felt the reader was asked over and over to suspend disbelief about how anyone in her situation would react. The main character seems devoid of any basic “fight or flight” reactions and I do not feel losing memory would rob someone of these basic instincts. So if you can accept the extremely passive nature of the protagonist and the slow pace, the author eventually gets you there. I couldn’t do more that three stars because even in the final, climactic scenes the action is played out in what seems like slow motion. It’s like calling out repeated “time-outs” in the middle of action that could it move would be suspenseful and thrilling. Instead it’s more like filming stop motion animation. I’m left lukewarm. It was an okay read but not memorable.

Koontz Does Voodoo

This was my first Dean Koontz novel. I’m thinking the dominant Voodoo theme is the exception to the rule with his books. It was interesting but I felt it was long and drawn out with excessive description intended I suppose to add to o the suspense or horror. It just became tedious for me. I did not skip ahead but was tempted several times. Wasn’t bad it held my interest. I’ll look for a Koontz novel that doesn’t involve voodoo. The narration was stellar. That held my interest. I loved the various voices, the way telephone calls were handled, the narrator saved the novel for me. I’d recommend it because the characters were likable. You root for their survival. However I’ll look for more of a mystery next time.
