Remarkable Depth & Breath
Revisado: 02-18-25
Amazing range of genres. Yet on top of his mind boggling talent, Hanks doesn’t allow his genius to give him license to be a jerk. If you weren’t already sure Tom Hanks is brilliant and truly a damn good guy, you will be after reading this.

Historia
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

Historia
Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity - yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there.

Brilliant Scholarly & Practical
Revisado: 05-30-24
I have long been a free thinking, left leaning Christian woman, with a graduate degree from a Christian liberal arts university. Prior to reading this book, the possibility or thought that Jesus may have had a wife or an intimate relationship with a woman was unthinkable to me. This in spite of knowing that Christ was both man & spirit in every way, He needed nourishment and rest. He felt anger, pain & despair. Yet, somehow I was unable to imagine Jesus as a sexual being.
This book has changed my worldview. I realize now that the dogma that society our society subtly teaches, that if Jesus had an intimate female partner it would have made him less, is now unthinkable.
It seems that only now do we have ears to hear from Mary Magdalene. Finally now, we may be ready to hear her voice. And we may be able to finally recognize that women, as well as men are capable of being fully human and fully worthy of an intimate experience with the spirit of God. Without shame.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Historia
At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, Egan's book tells the remarkable untold story behind Edward Curtis's iconic photographs, following him throughout Indian country from desert to rainforest as he struggled to document the stories and rituals of more than eighty tribes. Even with the backing of Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, it took tremendous perseverance. The undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate.

Narrator Spoils Incredible Story
Revisado: 01-14-23
The narrator sounds electronic or robotic. His voice may be useful in some other context, but not here, not as a storyteller. I recommend reading the book, rather than listening until another narrator tells this great story.

One dimensional good/evil characters, predictable and trite. Got the sense this author had a deadline and submitted something. Bought it in print first-couldn't keep reading for my book club selection of the month. Audible version was no better or worse.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Good Mystery-Terrible Narration. Read Book Instead
Revisado: 06-23-20
Not great literature, but a great summer mystery and storyline. I hesitate to be pointedly critical, but the narrator was a disappointing and puzzling choice with an odd, affected ‘normal’ accent, hard consonants (think Moira on Schitt’s Creek) and a terrible fake southern accent. Couldn’t Audible have found a southern narrator? Voices for all characters were forced with very poorly executed southern accents. The strong main character, Kya, is introduced as a 6 year old with a cloying voice and obvious fake accent. Unbelievably, her voice never matures as she grows into adulthood. The men’s voices sounded old and feeble, regardless of role or age. I gave up listening and read the last half of the book to myself. The Audible version might be good to keep you awake for a 12 hr road trip. But I’d recommend the book instead.
