Historia
Grace Evans, an overworked New Yorker looking for a total escape from her busy life, books an Airbnb on a ranch in the middle of Wyoming. When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she’s pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells—and he’s eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. But there are things Grace discovers that she’s not too pleased about: A lack of cell phone service. A missing woman. And a feeling that something isn’t right with the ranch.

This is a shady harlequin romance read by a male porn star
Revisado: 08-30-24
The way the guy narrates makes it feel dirty (not in a good way). The whole thing feels like a gross romance novel. To be fair, I’m stopping where I am and not finishing it but I cannot take the stalker style reading.

Charlie Besson is tense and sweating as he prepares for an insane job interview. His car is idling, like his life, outside the Hollywood mansion of Kathi Kannon. The Kathi Kannon, star of stage and screen and People Magazine’s worst dressed list. She needs an assistant. He needs a hero. Kathi is an icon, best-selling author, and an award winning actress, most known for her role as Priestess Talara in a blockbuster sci-fi film. She’s also known in another role: crazy. Admittedly so. Famously so. Fabulously so, as Charlie quickly discovers.

I really wanted to like this but...
Revisado: 05-14-22
I'm thinking repetitive, I'm thinking incessant, I'm thinking relentless.
I think somebody got a thesaurus for Christmas!
I had such high hopes for this book. The reviews were great, and I really wanted to love it. And at first it seemed promising.
I blame the editor mostly. You can feel as you read this that the writer wanted to create the great American novel that would become a screenplay that would win Oscars. And in order to do that he uses very affected literary tools that I can't believe the editor didn't cut. He repeats things three times (a few times twice and a few times four, but mostly thrice). Sometimes it is adjectives, sometimes it is premised with a phrase that also gets repeated three times just in case we have short term memory loss and can't remember this is what he is thinking (for example). I'm pretty sure this book sets a record for the use of the phrase I'm thinking... It is the single most distracting literary tool I have ever experienced. And it's applied very thick, very heavy, very liberally (yeah, like that- over and over and over again). Seriously, if you make a drinking game about it you will end up in Betty Ford.
Oh, and the main character is definitely NOT Carrie Fischer. No way, no how, no can do. *eyeroll*
I'm sad to say it but it was really hard to finish because this tool the writer uses is so incredibly distracting.
You should pass, you should read something else, you should save yourself the time.

Dull, pointless, hallmark movie
Revisado: 12-20-21
The characters are pretty dull and the story line is a schmaltzy hallmark movie. The title, meant to be clever, is misleading. I really don’t get why this book has so many good reviews.

It's so stupid when the plot falls apart but...
Revisado: 12-09-21
I still really enjoyed it. I noticed in earlier reviews that people were put out by the amount of tennis, but I felt like that just served to explain familial obsessions and damaging results. I didn't think it was too much.
The plot falls apart so badly that even some of the characters are astounded by how dumb it is when it happens. Also, the overall idea that anyone on the planet would let someone into their house at night and would let them move in for days/weeks/months (not sure how long it was overall) is just lunacy. You have to suspend a great deal of disbelief to enjoy this and accept that this family makes choices no sane person would ever make. But I did enjoy it overall.

Maggie Patel has landed her dream job at The New York Spectator; or, it would be, if she could get a decent story assignment. When a career-making interview finally lands on her desk, it’s with the last person she’d ever want to see again — Edward, the Crown Prince of Bairmorne...and her long-ago friend.

The narration is entertaining, like listening to a play but the story is slow and not all that interesting. I would have been annoyed if I had used a credit on this.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

I liked the narration more than the actual story
Revisado: 12-09-21
Based on the premise, I thought the story would be more fun but the main character is written more stoic. It was just ok for me.

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Historia
Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then...he hears the plot.

Just don’t
Revisado: 08-18-21
The “plot” is so convoluted and revealed by the story the writer wrote. But then as the writer figures it out like a simpleton, the story he actually wrote (not sure how this works since he ‘wrote’ the story but I guess didn’t read it or retain any of the information) drags on forever. The narrator is a dramatic robot.
I think a twist is supposed to be a surprise, not something you figure out very early in the book. I have to assume the people who gave this book a good review got a free copy and felt bad saying anything negative. And the people who were surprised by the twist must have been lobotomized.

To her adoring fans, Emmy Jackson, aka @the_mamabare, is the honest “Instamum” who always tells it like it is. To her skeptical husband, a washed-up novelist who knows just how creative Emmy can be with the truth, she is a breadwinning powerhouse chillingly brilliant at monetizing the intimate details of their family life.To one of Emmy’s dangerously obsessive followers, she’s the woman that has everything—but deserves none of it.

So good!
Revisado: 06-09-21
This book held my interest completely- couldn’t stop listening to hear what would happen next. It’s disturbing to think about the possibilities. The main character is pretty unlikable but there are so many people out there like her and so many more following people like her. It’s a good reminder not to be either one of those types of people.

I love everything about this book!
Revisado: 02-22-21
This book was an absolute delight. It's a story about a woman towards the end of her life who has regrets. She also wants to connect to something and she finds it in an unlikely place. I absolutely loved the curmudgeonly main character and she was very easy to sympathize with. The story is so well written and the narration is fantastic. I will add this book to the list of books I listen to over & over. It's such an interesting story that I listened to the whole thing in about a day. Loved it!
