Historia
This book offers for the first time a balanced history of the naval war as a whole covering all participants in all major theaters. The author takes the listener beyond just those World War I operations staged on the North Sea to include the Italians and Austrians in the Adriatic; the Russians, Germans, and Turks in the Baltic and Black Seas; and the French and British in the Mediterranean. The book is also notable for its inclusion of now-forgotten strategies for naval operations that never materialized.

The granddaddy of them all

The Black library is in many ways the house that Abnett built and it all started here. Unlike his later HH series books, though, this is tight and urgent and readable. It holds up.

Historia
Nearly everything people know about airships is wrong. Few realize that prior to the Hindenburg disaster airships transported passengers without a single casualty for more than twenty years, a record unmatched by any other form of transportation. When Giants Ruled the Sky tells the true but little-known story of the USS Macon (ZRS-5), the world's largest, most expensive, and most technologically advanced airship of her day, and the four men responsible for conceiving, designing, building, and flying her.

Very informative read for the airship neophyte and expert alike. My only gripe - the narrator really should’ve known how to pronounce “Akron”

Historia
"Surely make you lose your mind . . ." So the Eagles warn us about the outrageous and ruthless lifestyle of the ambitious rock-n-roller. In fact, Don Henley could barely listen to the track "Life in the Fast Lane" when they were recording it. He was so high that it made him sick. The band that embodied the American dream with globe-straddling success, impossibly luxurious lives, and almost supernatural talent also descended into nightmare with betrayal, hate-filled hubris, the skeletons of perceived enemies, brutally discarded lovers and former band mates left unburied in the road behind them.

Not what I expected, but
Revisado: 08-09-24
This my first time reading Mick Wall and his writing style is…different. I did eventually get around to kind of liking it but it was jarring at first. Also, the narrator wasn’t well suited to this style of writing and his Don Henley voice impression should never have been allowed to exist. But overall, an interesting read, though not much new for hardcore fans.

The predominant image of this first world war is of mud and trenches, barbed wire, machine guns, poison gas, and slaughter. A generation of European manhood was massacred, and a wound was inflicted on European civilization that required the remainder of the twentieth century to heal.

Great book, couple minor production issues
Revisado: 08-06-24
Massie was excellent and in top form here. Unfortunately, the production has a few issues - a passage about Seydlitz’s ordeal at Dogger Bank is inexplicably cut off mid-paragraph, and throughout the recording sentences are occasionally repeated for no reason apparent other than poor editing. That said, the narration is otherwise very good.

Historia
USS Nevada (BB-36) was America's first modern battleship. When its keel was laid in 1912, kings and emperors still ruled much of the world. When it finally slipped beneath the waves in 1948, America was the undisputed global superpower.

For a ship that never did what she was built to do - fight enemy battleships on the open ocean - Nevada had a fairly interesting and distinguished career. Worth a listen.

Historia
The walls have fallen, the gates are breached, and the defenders are slain. It is the end and the death. After seven brutal years of civil war, the Warmaster stands on the verge of victory. Horus Lupercal, once beloved son, has come to murder his father. The Emperor, a shining beacon of hope to many, an unscrupulous tyrant to others, must die. The lives of uncountable numbers have been extinguished and even primarchs, once thought immortal, have been laid low. The Emperor's dream lies in tatters, but there remains a sliver of hope.

Abnett is in his bag. I’m surprised that others didn’t love this one, because I think it’s the best storytelling of the series so far.

Historia
Triumphantly returning from the North Pole on May 24, 1928, the world-famous exploring airship Italia — code-named N-4 — was struck by a terrible storm and crashed somewhere over the Arctic ice, triggering the largest polar rescue mission in history. Helping lead the search was Roald Amundsen, the poles’ greatest explorer, who himself soon went missing in the frozen wastes. Amundsen’s body has never been found, the last victim of one of the Arctic’s most enduring mysteries....

An excellent book on early aviation, airships and arctic survival. Umberto Nobile is somewhat overshadowed in airship history by Eckener and the Zeppelin Company so this was my first experience with him. Quite an interesting character! Mark’s book is thoroughly researched and well written and I couldn’t put it down.
