What do we see when we watch reality television? Sociologist and TV lover Danielle J. Lindemann takes a long, hard look in the “funhouse mirror” of this genre, from countless rose ceremonies on The Bachelor to the White House and more (so much more!). Beginning with the first episodes of The Real World, reality TV has not only remade our entertainment and cultural landscape—it also uniquely refracts our everyday experiences and social topography.

I opening insight into history, bias, and reality TV
Revisado: 06-01-24
Read this book for a book club. Surprisingly I enjoyed this very much. I learned a lot about reality TV and how it gives us a glimpse of our culture, our beliefs as a society, and reflects our history as a nation. I have to say, I will not be watching reality TV in the same lines any longer. I had to say that the narrator sounded to me a lot like Siri.

Historia
All Jackie Goldschneider ever wanted was to be thin. As a child, she’d stand in front of the mirror, sucking in her stomach and arching her back to feel her ribs, praying to see a model-like figure looking back. As an obese teen, lonely and tormented by her weight, her doctor encouraged her to start dieting, ultimately leading to a prolonged battle with anorexia that nearly took her life. After decades of hiding her eating disorder from friends, family, and the world, Jackie is ready to expose the realities of her devastating struggle.

Honest
Revisado: 05-12-24
I watch all the real housewives shows, which was the reason I wanted to read this book. But I found out that I really didn’t know who Jackie was at all. Even as a physician myself, I did not appreciate the mind and the thoughts of what it is like to suffer from anorexia. This book really gives you a deep understanding the battle in someone’s mind that suffers from that disease. I really enjoyed it. Jackie is a great writer!

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Funny, relatable, and lighthearted
Revisado: 06-20-23
I chose to read this book after a recent episode that I stumbled upon of live when Bethenny Frankel mentioned Kelly’s book. I’ve always enjoyed watching Kelly on life but don’t catch it regularly. I like her witty and lighthearted personality. The book is an interesting look into her life. And even though she is famous I found her life to be relatable. I enjoyed all the stories about her family and her marriage and career. I found her struggles with being a working mom to be very relatable. I laughed out loud several times and finish this book quickly. Highly recommend.

Such an honest biography
Revisado: 12-04-22
Hard to believe that a star of such an amazing, funny, and unforgettable show has had such strife in his life. And being a physician, and I understand the addiction he is describing. But very few people would be this honest about what they go through with addiction. I really appreciate it. Learning more about one of my favorite sitcom characters, even though some of it was very unexpected and hard to hear. And I’m so glad I read this book. Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Matthew, Perry, friends, and everyone else in order to gain introspection on what it’s like to suffer from addiction. And even though much of it was dark, there were so many laugh out loud moments. A book I will not forget.

Helped me understand feedback so much!
Revisado: 09-05-19
This book was extremely insightful and answered many of the questions I had about how to handle feedback. More than that it’s hot you how to understand all of the different complicating factors in receiving feedback, and how we all interpret feedback differently. I believe this will help me better handle feedback, learn from it as well asGive useful feedback to coworkers. It covered a huge amount of information that I’m not sure how I could possibly ever remember. Also the female author reading the book had a very pleasant voice but the males voice was not very exciting.
