Over the course of this evening, he will raise five toasts to the five people who have meant the most to him. Touching Story About Life, Love, Regret and Forgiveness
Revisado: 12-10-24
This started slow for me but I’m so glad I carried on. It is such a beautiful story about love, life, friendship, regret and forgiveness. I ended up reading it twice. It brought me to tears at times. Much of it relatable. It was my book club choice for this year.

Historia
The long-hidden diary of a young Polish woman's life during the Holocaust, translated for the first time into English. Renia Spiegel was born in 1924 to an upper-middle class Jewish family living in Southeastern Poland, near what was at that time the border with Romania. At the start of 1939, Renia began a diary. By the fall of 1939, Renia and her younger sister, Elizabeth (née Ariana), were staying with their grandparents in Przemysl just as the German and Soviet armies invaded Poland. Cut off from their mother, who was in Warsaw, Renia and her family were plunged into war.

Heartfelt and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 08-18-24
This was hard to listen to at times. Much like Anne Frank, Renia endured so much. She was a beautiful writer and I couldn’t stop imagining how much we have missed out on because of her unfathomable death. She was able to write about her love and friendships all in the midst of war. She had such an optimistic way about her. I loved how the book explained at the end so many details on what happened to the people she had written about in her diary. What a treasure this diary is to her family and all of us who have had the privilege of reading it.

Historia
In the most savage wilderness on the planet, the Chinese crime cartels hunted the elephants for their ivory. And nobody dared to cross them... Could one man help to put an end to this horrific trade? He was an old friend. His death was suspicious. At the least, ex-special forces soldier Jason Green had to return to Africa to pay his respects. He never intended to get caught up in the murky world of the illegal ivory trade. And falling for a hot-blooded television reporter wasn't part of the plan either.

Exciting and Suspenseful
Revisado: 05-31-24
I thought this was a great story. I love elephants so any story involving them is on my list to read. I thought this story had everything. Lots of exciting and suspenseful content and even a little love story. The only thing that I didn’t enjoy was how the narrator spoke “Green” in such a weird way. But that was minimal. I really enjoyed this book and have already recommended it to several people.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

So Great. Finally the Truth.
Revisado: 01-16-23
I enjoyed this book. It was very eye opening. I can’t blame Harry for all the choices he made to protect his family. It’s shocking to see what the Royal Family “institution” allowed to happen over the years. I am sure Diana is beaming with pride, seeing her son make the choices he made to protect his family. Now he is able to live his life the way she always wanted to live hers. Free. I hope they find all the happiness in the world and I hope the Royal Family wakes up and changes their unrealistic ways and puts the British press in their place. Definitely worth a read. I enjoyed listening to Harry’s voice. You could hear the different emotions in his voice. It brought even more authenticity to the book.

Sad and Honest
Revisado: 11-27-22
This book made me cry. Of course like most people my age, I am a huge Friends fan. It was sad to read how tormented “Chandler” was during such a high point in his career. (No pun intended) I pray he continues to stay clean and sober. He is such a great talent and deserves much in life. I hope he finds the love and family he so desperately wants and I believes will help in his daily struggle to avoid the The Big Terrible Thing.

Beautiful Heartwarming and Painful
Revisado: 11-05-22
I bought the actual book while visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant sanctuary while I was in Africa recently, as a souvenir along with many other things. (I also adopted a couple elephants while there.) This book was everything and more than I could have imagined. Beautifully written. I could easily picture the scenes she so beautifully painted with her words. Having just spent 15 days on safari, there were so many things she spoke of that helped me further understand many of the elephant and other animal behaviors. I laughed and cried many times as she spoke of the love and loss she experienced during her amazing life. The narrator did a beautiful job reading this audible version. The emotion at times in her voice was so real that it was hard to believe it wasn’t Dame Daphne herself. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read. I know I have and will continue to recommend it to others. I will also most definitively read it again.

Historia
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

Worth the Wait
Revisado: 10-16-22
I was so excited when I heard Mike Rinder was writing a book about his experience with Scientology. After The Aftermath and every documentary about Scientology I was still wanting more and Mike’s book delivers. I love how he tells the dirty secrets of the cult, owns his own mistakes, apologizes to many and how he’s overcoming and healing. I love how he still has the dream of reconnecting with his family. He knows how manipulated they have been and to some extent, need a pass for that. I pray one day they too will wake up and see that there is so much for them waiting on the outside with all of us SP’s and WOGs!

A Beautiful Story of Loyal Friendship
Revisado: 09-26-22
This story was perfect to read as I prepare to visit Africa for the first time. I laughed and cried throughout this book. The bond between elephant and those who cared for and loved him was strong and resilient. Just like I’ve always heard, elephants never forget. I will most likely read more than once and I’ve already recommended it to friends. I couldn’t have loved it more.

At 15, Elizabeth Gilpin was an honor student, a state-ranked swimmer, and a rising soccer star, but behind closed doors, her undiagnosed depression was wreaking havoc on her life. Growing angrier by the day, she began skipping practices and drinking to excess. At a loss, her parents turned to an educational consultant who suggested Elizabeth be enrolled in a behavioral modification program. That recommendation would change her life forever.

Heart Wrenching
Revisado: 09-03-22
This book was heartbreaking to listen to. As a parent who sent their son to a “therapeutic school” it hit extra hard. His/Our experience was different in many ways. (It’s been 10 years since he graduated) He still says it saved him. I agree. They helped get him on medication (for the first time) and getting his depression and anxiety under control. They taught him coping skills through equine and different therapies. They built up his self esteem. He graduated early and at the highest level attainable which was really something as he struggled to finish anything prior to Ironwood Maine. Listening to Elizabeth’s account of her experience made me think how it could have been for my Trevor, had we picked the wrong school. It made me almost nauseous at times to think out of shear luck we didn’t send him to a nightmare school like Elizabeth experienced. Hearing the raw emotion in her voice brought tears to my eyes more than a few times. My Trevor still struggles at times with his depression. It’s a chronic battle for him. I pray Elizabeth continues to find happiness in her life and that this book reaches parents like me, that may be considering a therapeutic school for their child. Researching to an extreme would be my advice. Not only call the parents on the list most schools hand out for you to ask their experience, but ask to speak to the child/person that went to the school themselves. If I were in the position we were in 10-11 years ago, and had the information I’ve read in Elizabeth’s book, I would insist on it. I’d like to say I’d never send him in the first place…but I think back to the days of desperation…Trevor talking about taking his own life on a daily basis and we had exhausted all avenues to help him ourselves. This was a last ditch effort to save our son. We did it. It helped him. After reading this book I feel like we dodged a bullet. Congratulations to Elizabeth on this incredible memoir. I hope she’s finding peace and joy in her life.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
