Historia
In January 1811, five hundred slaves dressed in military uniforms and armed with guns, cane knives, and axes rose up from the plantations around New Orleans and set out to conquer the city. Ethnically diverse, politically astute, and highly organized, this self-made army challenged not only the economic system of plantation agriculture but also American expansion. Their march represented the largest act of armed resistance against slavery in the history of the United States.

Long Overdue Balancing of the History of the Struggle for Black Equality
Revisado: 05-23-23
While many might prefer the strides made nonviolently, militance is also a vital ingredient in the struggle.

Far from Mosley’s best
Revisado: 03-06-23
Badly in need of editing and even some major revision: The main character is a philandering bore who tiresomely describes the dress of even the most trivial characters, who would have you believe he has too much integrity to have more than a few friends yet is surrounded by highly talented associates willing and able to drop everything to help him, and though a voracious reader utters drivel such as the memory that his father used the phrase “soaked to the bone.”

Eight-seven? The narrator consistently uses “eighty-seventh.”
Revisado: 10-26-20
Great reading but the reader disregards McBain’s claim regarding how those of Isola call the precinct.

Historia
Following the Civil War, Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, thrived as a cauldron of sex and song, violence and passion. But out of this turmoil emerged a center of black progress, optimism, and cultural ferment. Preston Lauterbach tells this vivid, fascinating story through the multigenerational saga of a family whose ambition, race pride, and moral complexity indelibly shaped the city that would loom so large in American life.

Interesting story of decline
Revisado: 09-06-20
Narration was flowing despite surprising miscues such as general for venereal. Would have enjoyed more on Lieutenant Lee and other important side characters.

Gratuitous racism, incidental sexism
Revisado: 08-30-20
Race is introduced for no better reason than a pretext for using the n-word. Women have more than two dimensions only in descriptions of their bodies. MarLowe’s wisecracking is tediously unfunny.
