Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Wow, where to begin? This has moved up my list of favorite books and I have read/listened to hundreds. The book is beautifully written. Another reviewer called it emotionally plangent. The characters' journeys are defined by WWII in Germany and France. The lack of sentimentality in the tone of the book creates an additional tension given that the main characters are children. I had no problem following the narrative, location and timeline changes as some others have mentioned. I found the time weaving added an impetus to the storyline. I cannot recommend this highly enough......you will be sorry it ends.

It seems like an easy assignment for an assertive but sweet woman like Gracie Snow: track down her friend, Bobby Denton, a famous ex-jock, and bring him to Heaven (Texas, that is) to shoot a movie. How could he refuse a glamorous offer like that? Easy....

I recently purchased this older SEP book to listen to on a long drive. I have enjoyed many of her books in the past. However, this one seemed like the same old story with different names. If you haven't read many of her books, choose another one. Nobody's Baby is still a favorite of mine.

Historia
Here is the behind-the-scenes story of how the United States forged its wartime alliance with Britain, told from the perspective of three key American players in London: Edward R. Murrow, Averell Harriman, and John Gilbert Winant. Drawing from a variety of primary sources, Olson skillfully depicts the dramatic personal journeys of these men who, determined to save Britain from Hitler, helped convince a cautious Franklin Roosevelt and a reluctant American public to support the British at a critical time.

WWII, diplomacy, journalism, and affaires de couer

Any additional comments?
First of all, let me say this is a well written, illuminating account of WWII London and the major players in the British/American alliance. It is a nonstop read, and a highly educational, enjoyable one. There is much to learn about the behind the scenes action from this author. Not to be missed are the in-house diplomatic/political/military rivalries and competitions that were a constant source of frustration to individuals and the war effort. The author brings to life the war struggles by focusing on the individuals and their personality traits. The American ambassador, Mr. John Gilbert Winant, was a tremendous asset to our country. His story is one that too few Americans (including me) know and this history does much to correct that. So much has been written about Joe Kennedy's missteps while in that post, that this gentleman has been ignored. After reading this, I predict you will be searching for much more information on this man. The history of Edward R Murrow was new to me, also. I do remember him on TV when I was a young child, however, I was woefully ignorant of his time in England during the war. His stature as a famed broadcaster is more easily understood. I am on my second listening and keep making historical connections that I missed the first time. I will probably be re listening to parts of this over and over. There are liaisons of varying types and degrees that are woven into the fabric of this history. However, the most surprising are the love affairs amongst this elite group of history makers. Husbands, wives, daughters, sons........a very close knit group getting even closer. Was it the war? Lack of TV? Too many cocktail parties? Maybe it was in the English water..........If you love British and American history..........you will have a great time with this book

Revisado: 12-18-11
This is a great listen! I am a semi-retired, female, non-gamer. I took a chance on this and am so glad I did. I have listened to it virtually non-stop since I downloaded it.
The narrator does a wonderful job of keeping the suspense of the novel going and is a huge plus for this audible experience.
There is a good deal of reference to the 80s pop culture. Music, film, TV and gaming are all recalled.
Now I have to find another book to listen to on my Xmas drive. I couldn't wait to finish this one. But thanks to all the audible reviewers for suggesting this one. You guys never let me dowm
Merry Xmas in the real and virtual worlf!

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

My first Stephan King novel
Revisado: 12-11-11
Superb remembrance of a time I lived through with the interesting twist of a touching love story and aspects of time travel. The period is lovingly handled by King. I could hear the sounds of music at the dances and remember the jitterbugs at my high-school dances.
Mr King' s writting skills are a joy. This being my first of his novels, I understand now why his books are so successful. The narrator was also very pleasant to listen to.
I highly recommend this novel for those who remember these nightmare occurances during our country's past and the many that followed.
I found the effects and results of Mr Amberson's changes to history jarring. On further reflection, I realized the possible validity of those interpretations. An inferred and stirring tribute to Pres. Lyndon Johnson's brillant handling of the civil rights movement and flawed escalation of the Vietnam War.
For those younger, yes, it can happen here......read and learn and always beware the extreme answers. They bring danger to our democracy.

Incredible narration to a spellbinding classic....
Revisado: 09-05-10
I have tried many times to make it through a Faulkner novel, only to become frustrated with my inablility to follow the complicated (albeit brilliant) style of his writing. He and Joyce are the two greats that I have not read to finality with any of their novels that I have attempted. Consequently, I was delighted to see that Audible was publishing this audio book with Will Patton as the narrator. Having listened to at least a dozen of his readings, light dawned instantly that this was the answer to my predicament. I was confident that, with his assistance, Faulker would no longer be a puzzle that I could not solve. He would provide the roadmap to get me through the Mississippi terrain.
I was not wrong in my expectations and I have not been disappointed in Mr. Patton or Mr. Faulkner. Each time I pull into my parking place at work, or into the driveway at night, I am disappointed that I must wait to continue with the story. But it is such a prize that I want to stetch out the experience for as long as possible.
While I was not alive during the era he writes of, I can remember my youth in the South twenty years later. The storyline and culture are eerily familiar. The strands of human nature still woven into today's headlines. Mr. Pattons's voice is a welcome friend and contains not a trace of falsity to the Southern tongue. The story line is relevent today both as history and commentary. It is all here......and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Dull narration makes mediocre storyline worse
Revisado: 08-22-10
I am a huge fan of these authors....I was very disappointed in this book. A large part of the problem was the narration. The narrator was almost monotone in the delivery with very little range. He adopted a seriousness of tone that was never modulated during the ups and downs of the plot.
Also, the plot was not up to the authors' usual page turner. I found myself listening to this on my commute each day because I didn't have another new book to listen to. My advise would be to save your credits for the next Pendergast novel. If you are new to these authors', start with the first Pendergast and go through the series. You will not be disappointed.
