The accent used for the American Margaret was annoying in the extreme. I didn’t enjoy Emily’s portrayal as much either.

Historia
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

One of the best that I’ve read in the series so far! Spoiler alert! The only thing I didn’t like was the way that it left you hanging.,,

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

I’ve been listening to these out of order because of finding it in the Plus catalog and not realizing it wasn’t the first. In any case, this story is a great introduction to Smith and Watters and really lays the ground work nicely for what comes later. Great character development, great storyline, terrific book!!!

Dark and Sad
Revisado: 06-12-22
Historically interesting and compellingly and elegantly told, but unremittingly dark and depressing. One despairs that the weak minded would believe such lies and yet the same can be seen today, with people willingly believing claims with no truth in reality.

Great Story - Questionable Narrator
Revisado: 08-24-21
I think that I would have loved this book, if it weren't for the narrator's treatment of Constance's voice. His presentation of her voice was so loud and harsh, that I found it difficult to listen when 'Constance' was speaking. She was also acting somewhat unusually for Constance in this storyline (in my opinion, in any case), but I'm now not sure how much I allowed the narrator's voice to color my interpretation of what she was saying/doing.
The narrator did fairly well with Pendergast's voice, with the exception of the fact that sometimes it was so quiet as to be difficult to hear.
The volume varied so greatly between different characters, (Pendergast words barely a whisper, followed by another character's booming voice), that it had me turning the volume up and down, trying to get to a setting where I could make out what all the characters were saying, without damaging my hearing during the loud parts.
OK, enough whining about the narrator. The story itself was very intriguing and somewhat unusual -- in other words it was a pretty typical Preston & Child creation. I can't say much about the plot without spoiling it for future readers. Let's just say that it tied into some actual historical happenings in a surprising, but pleasing way. There is also a bit of a teaser at the end to make sure you are anxious for the next installment.

Death Among Rubies

I enjoyed this second book in the series as much as the first. The characters are delightful and the challenges faced by women of intelligence fighting for women’s rights during Victorian times adds an interesting facet to Ms Ffolkes’ character. I just wish that there were more books in this series!

Historia
Two spellbinding mysteries, one contemporary, and one ancient - that will challenge Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James as no case ever has. Glastonbury is a town revered as the mythical burial place of King Arthur, and, according to New Age followers, a source of strong Druid power. Something terrible and bloody shattered Glastonbury Abbey's peace long ago - and now it is about to spark a violence that will reach forward into the present.

A Finer End Review
Revisado: 01-15-21
I love all of DC’s books, but this one was especially wonderful. The way she wove the history of Glastonbury Abbey and the surrounding area into the storyline was nothing less than sublime. I can’t say much more without giving away too much of the plot, so read on and enjoy!

Dark and Dismal
Revisado: 05-08-20
This narrator, with his growling, monotone voice made it almost impossible for me to finish the story. His attempts at accents had me initially thinking characters were Asian when they were actually German.
The story? I think it was OK. Perhaps I would have liked it better if the narrator had been better. It was very dark and depressing.

Historia
A peaceful Minnesota town, where crime is something that just doesn’t happen, is about to face its worst nightmare. A young boy disappears. There are no witnesses, no clues — only a note, cleverly taunting, casually cruel. Has a cold-blooded kidnapper struck? Or is this the reawakening of a long-quiet serial killer?

Night Sins - Really?
Revisado: 03-13-19
Story was ok but too many sex scenes for my taste. Agent O Malley was frustrating in how she continued to sabotage herself. Other characters were so blatantly narcissistic that it felt manipulative.
Then the end! Ugh. I won’t spoil it for folks who haven’t read it yet but let’s just say it was disappointing, to say the least. Guess it was just a teaser to get you to read the next book. Boo! On the upside, the narration was great.

Martha Grimes has put together the perfect set of characters. I love them all! And the stories are varied and intriguing. This one is set in part in the US, giving a change of scenery, and a bit of a break from Agatha. Thank you MG!
