Narrator’s voice nearly ruined it
Revisado: 03-24-24
I hated the breathy whisper talking of this narrator. Awful. The story wasn’t my fav John Marrs but it had twists in just the right places and was intriguing. It was just too much of a police procedural. I find those to typically be just ok.

Historia
Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A dark and suspenseful listen
Revisado: 01-09-24
I had no idea what this book was about or what to expect but I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The narrator was great and I thought the story was well paced. The occasionally change in POV was nice as well to get inside some of the crazy thinking in the story.
This was much more psychological and suspense rather than straight thriller I’d say. But still really enjoyable.
I did find the beginning a little abrupt and difficult to get my bearings what was going on and why it mattered so much. But I think that was partially the authors point and once I cottoned on then it worked to advantage to begin with that confusion.
The gaslighting and manipulation of different characters was so well done and intriguing.
The only drawback was maybe that by about 3/4 of the way through I’d pretty much worked most of it out. Still enjoyable just less shocking. I’d definitely recommend.

Quick and enjoyable
Revisado: 01-07-24
This story grabbed my attention quickly. The pacing and the short chapters were perfect. It felt like a criminal minds episode in longer form. I listened to 75% of it in one go and finished the rest the next day. It usually takes me weeks to get through a book. I’ll definitely be looking for more by this author.

Cute story just an ok narrator
Revisado: 01-06-24
It took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did I was hooked and found it heartwarming and cute. However the narrator was not great on the male voice and absolutely did not do a British accent as someone who lives in the UK. That dampened my enjoyment of the book somewhat.

Chilling and sad
Revisado: 11-06-23
This was my first Lisa Jewell book and it did not disappoint. It took me a little bit to get into the book and I found the mother a bit unlikable but as the story progressed it hooked me in and I cared less about how I felt about the mother. The narrator’s voice almost made me quit though. She used a sort of baby talk tone that I hated immensely at some points. I’ll definitely be looking out for other Lisa Jewell books in future that’s for sure.
