Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

The narrator makes this an absolute slog
Revisado: 07-05-23
I’m a few hours into this, and it’s grueling trying to get through because the narrator is so bland. I haven’t even got to the part when the war actually started yet and it’s absolutely terrible.

Called “the best account of combat since Black Hawk Down” by Men’s Journal, Thunder Run is a no-holds-barred look at the sweep of Baghdad, Iraq in 2003 by U.S. armed forces. One of the boldest gambles in modern military history, the surprise attack on Baghdad by three battalions of tanks and APCs and less than 1,000 men total was the single stroke that is credited for ending the Iraqi war.

Learn your subject matter before a performance.
Revisado: 03-15-23
The book itself is decidedly mediocre, this is made worse by the scene chewing narration. The book sounds like it’s being read by Zapp Brannigan or some Phil Hartman character.
Add to that, the narrator incorrectly pronouncing a multitude of military words and terms - ANYONE OUT THERE IN CHARGE OF HIRING NARRATORS - A TANK ROUND IS PRONOUNCED “SAY-BO” - it’s not “SABIT”, it’s not “SUEBOT” - every single performance gets this wrong and it drives me up the wall.
That being said, I’m not even half way through the book and I’m not sure I’m going to finish it.

Entertaining Story…
Revisado: 12-15-22
I reached the end of this book & wanted to put down some words about the series, since the epilogue of this one made it seem like the series was ending.
Overall an entertaining journey, however it occasionally drifts into “right wing prepper fantasy” and cheesiness in my opinion. Bourne writes a military perspective very well & has good subject matter knowledge, so the main criticism is that the series would benefit immensely from having a narrator with a military background, because this guy would spell out things like “B.U.D.S.” and “NODS”, where actual troops just say “buds”, etc.

Historia
In the early years of the Second World War, the elite force of German submariners known as the Ubootwaffe came perilously close to perfecting underwater battle tactics and successfully cutting Britain's transatlantic lifeline. To the Allies, these enemy sailors were embarking on a mission of unequivocal evil. Each member of the Ubootwaffe understood that he must take pride in being part of a unique brotherhood. He had to do so because he was setting out on a journey that would test his mental and physical endurance to the very limits, and which he had little chance of surviving.

Glad this was free.
Revisado: 10-10-22
If I’d have paid for it, I’d have asked for a refund.
The book reads as if a school teacher was carrying a stack of research papers, tripped, fell, dropped the papers and didn’t bother to put them back in order. It’s rambling, disorganized and VERY repetitive. Author tends to lean on very long winded quotes from other books, Frequently the same books, over and over - to the extent that I should probably just read those books. A lot of VERY long lists of dates/events, and repeats the same things frequently.
This is one of the few, probably the second, Audiobook I’ve not finished.

Some cheese, but some brilliance as well.
Revisado: 09-21-22
So I will start with the opinion that there are some corny dialogue moments, and it’s generally hard to do any vampire fiction without treading ground that’s already well trodden.
That being said, the cast and foley is amazing and overall it was good enough despite the occasional eye-rolling I had, that I’m looking forward to the rest of the story.

Then Hosaka Corporation reactivates him, for a mission more dangerous than the one he's recovering from: to get a defecting chief of R&D-and the biochip he's perfected-out intact. Historia
In the early 1900s, as the oppression of Russia's imperial rule takes its toll on Finland, the three Koski siblings - Ilmari, Matti, and young Aino - are forced to flee to the United States. Not far from the majestic Columbia River, the siblings settle among other Finns in a logging community in southern Washington, where the first harvesting of the colossal forests begets rapid development, and radical labor movements begin to catch fire. The brothers face the excitement and danger of pioneering this frontier, while Aino devotes herself to organizing the industry's first unions.

Not what I’d usually read, but an amazing discovery.
Revisado: 11-30-21
I ended up here after enjoying “Matterhorn” immensely.
I was apprehensive at first, but Bronson Pinchots reading and Marlantes’ writing on Matterhorn swayed me, and I’m glad it did.
I fell in love with the characters, and they eventually began to feel like…family. I ached when tragedy befell them. I cheered when they won a hard fought victory.
I’ve been recommending this book to nearly everyone I know, because it’s THAT GOOD.
5/5 stars and will definitely reread it.

An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Revisado: 03-08-21
Truthfully the story starts out great and only gets stronger, but at the end feels like it peters out a bit to me. Fillions performance takes it from 3-4 stars. He is brilliant.

Revisado: 08-07-20
I LOVED the first 3 books - but the narrator for Lyria drove me up the wall. Her voice and lack of inflection made me grind my teeth with dread every chapter she narrated. It went from being a series I couldn’t put down, to one I struggle to pick back up.
I’m about half way through the book, and I just don’t think I can finish it, her performance is so awful.
