Almost listened to it in one swoop. I narration was amazing, thought I would have loved these Germans to have German accents. It didn't matter in the end, the story extremely was compelling.

Beautiful, poignant, and I couldn't put it down.
Revisado: 02-27-25
This novel was a beautifully written escape into another time. Though heartbreaking, it was like the entire book was poetry.
The only reason I didn't give a narration a perfect score is because these German characters had a British accent. I love a British accent, so it was not difficult to listen to at all. But, could've had a tad more authenticity. Sometimes the narrating is reason to not to listen to a book, but this is not one of those times.

Historia
For Stella Bled Lawrence, being wealthy and stylish in 1938 is exactly what it's cracked up to be. She's blissfully unaware of the rising tensions in Europe even as she travels to Vienna on the eve of the Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. Stella and her husband, Nicky, witness the night's atrocities firsthand. Even as they watch the horror, they never imagine it will touch them personally, a pair of wealthy Americans on their honeymoon, but touch them it does.

Adventure set it WWII - not historical fiction
Revisado: 01-22-25
This story wasn't the worst unless you are looking to understand history through realistic wartime situations. The novel is on the order of "Murder She Wrote" or "Matlock" where danger happens, but it passes due to incredible luck. I might listen to another in the series if I'm in the mood to be entertained, but not when I'm hoping to gain historical knowledge or imagine the real life tragedies of WWII.

I know the story of Josephine Baker and was anticipating learning more and living in that world for a short time, but the writing was amateurish, and the narration was definitely not professional. I had to stop listening.

This is a beautiful love story told through the eyes of two brave women. It was the perfect balance of history, humanity, horror and hope. The narration was lovely and did not distract, but enhanced the storytelling.

I wanted more....
Revisado: 10-03-24
This book has a very slow rhythm. The diary entry style of writing is full of deep introspection and sadness. I think it's important to experience a story like this, though. It declares complexities of humanity and the horrors of war, and the war we call discrimination that is always with us. I wish the conclusion had been more robust. I had to look twice to be sure it didn't skip ahead somehow because it was very abrupt. I also would have benefited from historical notes.

The narration was a distraction!!!
Revisado: 07-06-24
The narrator for this audiobook didn't help me lose myself in the story, I cringed every time she said a German name or even the few German words that she spoke. It sounded so unnatural and weird. Also, the young woman in the 1970s portion of the book, lacked complexity. She was always angry. Though I understand she was supposed to have had a challenging and bitter life, I'm positive if this person were real, she would have had a wide range of emotions. This is one audiobook that I think would've been better had I read it myself.
There were also some phrases in the book that made me think they were luring me in before they switched it over into some Christian novel.
I quit the book halfway though. There are too many other options out there.

Historia
The ideal of a new Germany swept up Sophie Scholl in a maelstrom of patriotic fervor - that is, until she realized the truth behind Hitler's machinations for the fatherland. Now she and other students in Munich, the cradle of the Nazi government, have banded together to form a group to fight for the truth: the White Rose. Risking everything to print and distribute leaflets calling for Germans to rise up against the evil permeating their country, the White Rose treads a knife's edge of discovery by the Gestapo.

It was fine.
Revisado: 06-16-24
The story of the White Rose resistance group is powerful, With a book this long, I expected more details about the real work they did, with well-known facts as highlights. In the case of this book, however, a lot of time was spent building up emotions and circumstances, then the story cut away, only to return to the scene a week or years later. If the fictional aspect of this story was better, I may have been able to overlook the missing factual detail, but it was not great either. The ending was unexpected (in a that-seemed-like-a-cop-out way). Almost like she didn't know how to end the story, so pick something fantastical to end it quickly.
I also disliked the narrator. I've listened to one other book she performed (also about the White Rose actually) and felt the same. She only has a couple voices, and all the women characters have an aloofness that seems unrealistic...unless they are in a panic, and then it's old fashioned unbelievable drama for a paragon two.
