Compelling story weaving personal and historical

Was very interesting to be reminded of the events of the Cold War. Also really enjoyed getting to know the characters involved and their tight bonds. I took one point off bc I felt narration was a bit flat. Also a little jarring as she jumped from the personal to the historical often with nothing really tying the two together. Overall tho well worth listening to.

The harrowing journey

Very moving and gripping. But could have used some serious editing. Javier describes every detail, every shit and piss and every step he took thru the desert. Could have cut it down. Also he had a staccato delivery that was a little off putting. Despite my gripes, it was an absorbing look at a harrowing journey and showed the compassion and love that people are capable of.

A poet’s words

If you love language, this book glows. Deeply moving, alternately joyous and painful, this book describes a flawed family with love and honesty. I did feel it lagged a little in the middle as she describes the overwhelming fear and self worthlessness again and again. It picked up and closed beautifully tho. I also appreciated learning a bit about Jamaican history. Highly recommend this one.

Dragged out and emotionally flat. By the end you don’t care a whit about any of the characters. Hated this book and can’t believe I listened to the whole thing!
Narrators especially the woman really grated.

Came back to a familiar story and it was worth it

I’ve read this book 5 or 6 times over the years. It is timeless. Rosamunde pike was great. I did think when she read male voices she was a bit flat. Also as I’d recently watched the old bbc series, I couldn’t get mrs Bennett’s voice out of my head. And her mrs Bennett just didn’t do it for me.
Still overall thoroughly enjoyable.

I knew the bare outlines of this story but wonderful book really brought it to life. Performance was also great but would have preferred a french acccented narrator rather than English.

Had to work to get thru this one

Interesting story but just didn’t like the narrator. She tried out different accents (not convincingly) and was somewhat monotonic. Spoilt the book.

Overwrought but enjoyable

A little melodramatic. I kept wanting to give up on it but still found it compelling. Also couldn't they have found a narrator that didn't mangle French pronunciation given that the characters are French origins? Still the story was colorful and an interesting look at a time and place that I knew nothing about.

Sublime book

Thoroughly enjoyable and so relevant today. Read like one of humboldts own writing - poetry and science combined. Throw in biographic sketches of explorers, artists, scientists and poets. A fabulous read. I found the narrator's voice a little monotonic but not disturbingly so.
