Is there an ethics that we can all agree on without stifling pluralism and freedom? What would such an ethics look like? Most important, how should you, as a thoughtful person, find your way among the moral puzzles of the modern world and its cacophony of voices and opinions? These are just some of the engaging and perplexing questions you'll tackle as you join Professor Kane for this thought-provoking, 24-lecture examination of the problems surrounding ethics in the modern world.

Possibly the best from the great courses
Revisado: 03-23-24
I've listed to dozens of courses from this series, and I think this is the best I've listened to. The discussion was very logical and easy to follow (I am a scientist, but have never taken courses in philosophy, but I have studied quite a lot of theology). My favorite parts were the last few lessons where he pulls together the ideas of universal truth, universal worth, and couched it into the diverse world religions. This course is having me step back and really reevaluate how I live my life. So sad I'm 20 years out of my undergrad and just now coming across these ideas.

excellent even for those of us who have experienced minimal trauma
Revisado: 02-04-24
The stories told herein reminded me of how easy I have had it in life. With that said, I have had hard times. However I picked this up to see if I could start to understand the depth of struggles of many people in my life, and understand how they grew strong and not bitter. To my surprise, the wisdom in this book was transformative for me. It provides a solid framework for growth for anyone, regardless of how deep of trauma experienced or how hard one's challenges have been.

What if we understood faith crisis as part of a natural cycle of spiritual growth, a breaking open to make room for new life and new faith? In the new book Navigating Mormon Faith Crisis, Thomas McConkie draws on the study of adult development to provide a map for people who find themselves in faith crisis, fearing they might have taken a wrong turn in their spiritual progression.

Essential for any leader and member
Revisado: 08-06-23
It would benefit any church organizaiton for leaders (and everyone else) to read and understand this work. I found limited focus on faith crisis in this book. Rather, the author provides an amazing connection of human developmental stages to the development of faith. So actually faith crises are amplified since many of us don't understand these priciples. If we all understood each other's faith journey in this context, I bet we would be enjoying the company of many of our loved ones therein. I find contextualizing my faith journey according to these stages now provides greater peace and is making me feel more comfortable in my faith, even though I can't say I ever really felt like I fit in any wards I have lived in. Thank you for writing this book.

Historia
In this exciting book, Paula Fredriksen explains the variety of New Testament images of Jesus by exploring the ways that the new Christian communities interpreted his mission and message in light of the delay of the Kingdom he had preached. A new introduction reviews the most recent scholarship on Jesus and its implications for both history and theology.

A well crafted study of the historical Jesus
Revisado: 08-06-23
While I don't agree with everything theologically, the author provides a very interesting treatment of the historical Jesus. It is quite technical. Having studied much theology over the years, I thought this would be a quick "listen to at 3x speed" book, just looking for new insights. However, I had to slow down since she took a unique approach to ask "who was Jesus". she also had a lot of rich historical information I had missed before. She also raises valid questions about the interpretation of scripture from a later Christian point of view vs. what was likely the point of view of the Jews, pagans, Christian Jews, and ex-pagan pagans. I really appreciated this book, but it requires concentration to listen to and a solid background in the Bible and 1st century history.

N.T. Wright's accessible new volume, built on his Cambridge University Hulsean Lectures of 2004, takes a fresh look at Paul in light of recent understandings of his Jewish roots, his attitude toward the Roman Empire, and his unique reframing of Jewish symbols in relation to his experience of the risen Christ. Then Wright attempts a short systematic account of the main theological contours of Paul's thought and its pertinence for the church today.

exceptional, but very advanced and philosophical
Revisado: 07-08-23
I give it 5+ stars for the quality of the content but 4 stars here for accessibility, given its complexity. this is not for the casual Christian. While I come from a different Christian denomination with some differences in doctrinal understanding of the scriptures compared to wright, i enjoy the deepness in thought and the care he takes on the implications of the doctrinal stances we all take. I picked up this book expecting to get an even deeper dive into doctrine than his other books, and that's what you'll get here, as an understatement! I really enjoyed this book, but it is not for the theological novice. The vocabulary used, the assumption of previous knowledge of the historical setting and sociopolitical background is on par with someone with at least a few years of focused University-level study of the Bible and 1st century near-eastern and Mediterranean history. I can easily follow most theological books listening to them on 2x speed while biking to work, but I had to slow this one down and follow along in the printed book itself!

Historia
In The Day the Revolution Began, N. T. Wright once again challenges commonly held Christian beliefs, as he did in Surprised by Hope. Demonstrating the rigorous intellect and breathtaking knowledge that have long defined his work, Wright argues that Jesus' death on the cross was not only to absolve us of our sins, it was actually the beginning of a revolution commissioning the Christian faithful to a new vocation - a royal priesthood responsible for restoring and reconciling all of God's creation.

excellent and deep book
Revisado: 06-01-23
I gained a deeper appreciation for our Savior's atonement and its greater purpose. it was quite long for a simple point, but that is because, as a more scholarly publication, it provides support for the main thesis over and over again with different lines of evidence, each accompanied by new insights. I definitely will need to listen again. Now I note that this book is not for the novice reader of scripture, as it assumes a deep and broad understanding of the Bible and some about classical literature. nonetheless I found this greatly insightful and had to buy a hard copy too.

not just a regurgitation of facts
Revisado: 03-30-23
i went in thinking this would be just an introduction to the new testament, but foubd there was a lot of deeper discussion of scholarly theological concepts and debates. this really opened my eyes to many things I had never thought about with respect to the scriptures. thus this is better fit for people who already have read the new testament a few times and maybe have been introduced to some of the scholarly takes on it. Personally I loved this!

The book of Ezekiel contains some of the most incredible prophecies in the Bible, including detailed description of a nuclear war and the cleanup afterward. Ezekiel ministered to a nation experiencing judgment for its sins, and may have some lessons for us today. Ezekiel's name means "God strengthens, or God will strengthen". Ezekiel is one of the three that were called Captivity Prophets (the other two are Jeremiah and Daniel). Ezekiel never mentions Jeremiah in his writings, but he does mention Daniel three times.

some excellent insights, but mixed with racism
Revisado: 09-22-22
I found Chuck has studied the Bible quite faithfully and presents some fascinating insights, many of which hold up well to scrutiny. I found lots of useful information for my Bible study and for classes i get to teach in my church. I also came away with a number of valuable insights that bring me closer to my Savior. However I find that I have critically assess what is supported by real facts. Chuck picks and chooses what science he believes in, resulting in presentation of pseudoscience that supports his political views (e.g., anti climate change). However I was quite concerned about several racist comments against Muslims and a very strong "us vs. them" mentality against anyone who is not evangelical Christian. The statements Chuck makes makes it clearer why we are dealing with the radicalization of the Christian right. An important statement that Chuck makes is that anything that doesn't bring one closer to their Savior is an idol. I worry that several of the statements did not bring me closer to my Savior and the teachings in the new testament. thus, this must be listened to with great caution and I can't in good faith recommend this to anyone.
